My 73 c-4 trans is hard to get to engage into park or reverse after you drive it.You can move the gear selector down to low then back up to reverse and park and it will engage fine.Other than that it drives and works great.Any ideas?
The linkage moves freely and there doesn't seem to be any play in it.Could it be something internal like the valvebody or maybe poor flow of the fluid?
"Park" is strictly mechanical, nothing to do with hydraulics.
Disconect the shift rod where it connects to the trans shift arm and work the arm manually, see if it shifts into park okay. If it does the problem is in the linkage or the steering column. If it still doesn't go into park drop the pan and check the linkage from the arm to the valve body.
Another possibility is the shifter socket, that's what Ford calls it. That's the collar below the steering wheel that the shift lever goes into. Very common for them to crack internally and make shifting difficult. When it breaks completely the shifter doesn't do much of anything.
