Anyone with headers on a flatty , If you would be so kind I would like to see how your exhaust piping is routed after the headers . I just installed a set of Reds Headers and they fit real well but the pipe routing to get past the clutch linkage looks a little tight .
No pics handy but I can get them. Red's sells "extensions" that fit equally well and take the exhaust to right where you would put the muffler. That's what mine has, with 22" Smithy's. They aren't that much (or weren't 7 years ago)
BTW, I've become concerned that the headers are boiling the fluid out of the steering box, it leaks like a sieve. I put header insulating wrap on the section of header right next to it, but I'm thinking I need a heat shield because the rearmost tube is right there too. What do you think?
Edit: here's some pics; extension ends right where you see the muffler clamp
Thanks Ross that helps . The driver side header comes out at a funny angle , but I see on your truck it appears to work out OK . I will chech on Reds Exhaust pipes .
Regarding the heat shielding: I had read this a day or two ago and remembered it while I was pulling the engine on my truck last night. I stuck my hand under the manifold to feel how much clearance there was between a stock manifold and the steering gear box. There wasn't any on my truck! The manifold was touching the top bolt of the gear box. It had been that way so long that it had worn the corner off of the bolt and was starting to wear a hole in the manifold. I'm assuming this is because the front and rear motor mounts were both flattened out and oil soaked. The gearbox shows no signs of being hot and its full of oil. So, I wouldn't worry about any heat shields on your headers.
I have STP in mine we will see how it works out . A heat sheild is always an idea if it appears to be getting boiled . That being said we do have a pretty effective natural cooling system up here about 7 months out of the year .
