I cycled the pump about 3 times (key on, key off, repeat) without starting after draining the fuel lines to get the fuel up there again. There's also the possibility something else is at play. Did you open the fuel bowl drain valve to see what's going on? Foam, or fuel? Quality of fuel?
He uses an in line filter , not sure . I'll ask him ..
He bypassed the tank switch & tanks by using a hose & a can of fuel ..It starts now but won't stay running . I think air in the system ..
Yeah, I thought that too when mine didn't work. I could hear it, but did not pump. Did he whack it yet? Do it with PUMP RUNNING/energized. For me, the noise changed and it instantly pulled fuel thru my pre-filter.
FWIW, these pumps do not like a restriction pre-pump. Using a 'primary' type filter before the pump is a recipe for a short pump life. A 100mic 'screen' is adequate to protect the pump and the OE filter is plenty adequate to protect the injectors. With good fuel, the OE filter can last 50k or more and a fuel pressure gauge post filter is adequate to monitor filter performance. Jus' sayin....
He is up and running .. turns out his final filter was the reason it wasn't running right after the pump began to work . He bypassed it for now & all is good . It was more than likely the reason the pump went out in the first place . He asked me to tell every one thanks for the input ...

Also, the pump only runs for like 30secs after ignition is turned on if engine does not start.
His system was a kit & came with a circuit that would not run the pump with no oil pressure . He does have a gauge & started noticing it fluctuating be for it quit . He stopped & filled up & changed one of the filters , & about 30 miles later that s when it quit..
He hasn't driven this one for quite a few years , that may have contributed to it as well ..
It was the screen filter . No one had one , & he didnt want to wait till tomorrow to get back on the road , there are 2 filters to begin with as I understand it ..
Clogged injectors are waaay more expensive... I hope he drove it straight to the auto parts store.
He had it towed off the highway to an auto zone store , another driver towed the car & trailer he was towing to the store as well. WHen he gets to a land line I'll get the entire story , cell coverage breaking up ect..

This has been bugging me a little. A 7.3 PSD will not run without 'oil pressure' since the injectors need HPO to operate. This is why you seldom (ever?) hear about engine failures due to lack of lubrication...

Since his fuel system was a conversion , no inertia switch , it had a circuit added to tell the fuel pump there was oil pressure , before the fuel pump would run is the way I understood it ..
