OK I have cut a piece of 5/16 hose to put in place of the pump on the sending unit. Now you stated before to reuse the 2 gold clamps that were already in there....problem there were no clamps when i removed it. now I need to use gold over steel because of corrosion?? Also do i need to use a piece of hose for the return line on the sending unit or just leave it and let it flow into the tank?
good to know there is something that I don't have to replace or find Now I will have to get to advanced auto and see if they will price match rockauto on the fuel tanks straps. I'm much rather pay around $22 rather than $50.
Thanks Charlie. I have gotten everything moved over to the good tank and just have to get a new set of straps this week and it will be back in the truck. I also remembered to get a fuel filter to put inline on the frame rail where I can easily change it out.
well I finally got a battery in the truck. First day I haven't had a list of stuff to do and its been nice out. Since I havent finished running the fuel lines back to the tank, i just used a piece of line from the fuel pump and stuck it in the gas can. I also poured a little in the carb. So I jumped in and turned the key. Motors cranking but all im getting is some puttering. Going to grab some starter fluid and an extra had and try to get it to started.
Well I went back over things this afternoon. I had the motor 180* out. When i turned it to try to get it to TDC I forgot to place my finger over the spark plug hole so I didnt realize i had it on the exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke. Problem #1. So I got that right. Then I pulled the dizzy to make sure the button was pointing to the #1 cylinder. It wouldnt seat so I had to turn the oil pump rod to get the dizzy to set right so I could get the lock down screw back on. I also noticed that I had my fuel lines reversed on the fuel pump coming off the motor. Ran out of time tonight but I will switch the fuel lines on the pump and give it another try.
So I went out earlier and swapped the fuel lines on the fuel pump, put a small amount of gas in the carb and turned the key. Puff and started to start but nothing. I noticed a small amount of gas at the inlet of the small inline filter between the carb and purl pump. I'm wondering if that filter could be blocked? Should I try to remove it and hook the line directly to the carb?
Take it loose, and point it in a can/ Bump the starter, and make sure it's getting fuel.
You should be coming from the tank to the pump, to the filter to the carb with your new set up. There isn't really a need for a return line anymore.
Just put a fuel filter on the return line and let it suck air.
Well I didnt get a chance to mess with the truck this weekend. Instead I ended up redoing the front end of my wifes 01 explorer. I've never done anykind of suspension work so this was a leaning experience. I replaced the hubs, upper control arms with ball joints, lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, and sway bar end links. Oh and 2 new tires. I also never realized there were so many adjustments to make sure everthing is "close" to where it was. Lets just say i had a slow wild ride to the alignment shop monday morning. At least the guy doing the alignment laughed and said "no worries, I've seen worse" But, she sides and steers like a new car and the wife is very happy.
