not normal check compression in each cylinder could be a bad ring set

if it is a bad ring set , i am looking at a complete rebuild right? i know the heads, exhaust, plugs, wires, oil pan, crank, crank bearing all need to come out. if i have to go that far(i hope not) is there any perfomance mods i can so? maybe use 4.6 pistons? get the HP and tq from a v8 in a v6 form?

4.2 bore 96.8 mm

4.6 bore 90.2 mm

Your 4.2 already makes "V8" power. You just have to find the right V8 to compare it to. Compared to most smaller V8s from the '70s and '80s, it's a powerhouse. There is no practical way to boost you power dramatically on that engine.

1.5 quarts in 4500 miles? Not great, but not a reason for a tear down.

Under "warantee" and as a way to shed responsibility for a loose motor, manufacturers will tell you up to 1 qt per 1000 miles is "normal".

What oil are you running?

According to Ford this is well within what they consider normal oil consumption.

U think it bs?

We had 01 V10 that would gulp 1 gallon of oil every 5K miles. been doing for about years before we got tired of refill oil so often that it trade in toward 2011 f250.

oil is 5/20. brand alwasys changes. and i had no clue that a 4.2 had a bigger bore than a 4.6. that is kind of crazy

I had an Econoline 4.6 that would go through 1 qt between 3k mi oil changes (about the same rate you're talking about), and the dealer told me they wouldn't even look at it unless it was at the 1 qt per 1k mi another poster mentioned.

Yea, it's not great but it falls into the "normal" range unfortunately.

FWIW, the 113,000 mile 4.3 in our Lexus and the 98,000 mile 4.0 in our Exploder use zero between changes.

IIRC, ditto for my 60k 2.9 Ranger V6, 40k 2.3, 70k 300, and a host of others, including my 3.hate in a Mecury Mink--a rental fleet refugee that sank at 60 or 70k after killing a Honda Accord. And our Honda Accord didn't use oil either....

"YMMV" as they say.......
