96 F-250 PSD ,6637 air filter,3"DP,Auto ,4:10 gears 7.3 engine . Runs good untill you get above 1900-2000 rpm starts missing bad. when pulling a hill with camper it will drop down to 40 mph with my foot on the floor. It has 250,000 miles on it
It sounds to me like a case of bad injector o-rings. If you pull the fuel filter is it all black? Does the fuel in the bowl look dark?
You could check your fuel pressure as well. There is a schrader valve on the Fuel Pressure Regulator on the side of the fuel filter housing. You can remove the little black plastic cap and then use a stick style tire pressure gauge to check it. You're looking for 50+ PSI at idle with about 60-65 being optimal. Have some rags handy as it will spray some fuel when you're checking it.
Black fuel filter and dark blue fuel means you're getting oil in the fuel from leaky injector o-rings. It isn't a difficult fix. Only costs you about $100 too if you're inclined to do it yourself. Do yourself a favor and put new glow plugs in there at the same time for about another $100 and you'll be good to go for a while.
Of course the alternative is to get a new set of injectors or to have yours rebuilt. Jim at Rosewood diesel can set you up with a set of premium rebuilds for less than $1600 and they will have the new o-rings on them already. Plus you could step it up to stage 1's for the same price and have a lot more power on tap. I have to be honest, unless the injectors have been rebuilt before and with that kind of mileage on those injectors I would seriously consider rebuilding them unless you just plain can't afford it. It is no more work to put rebuilt ones in (less actually) than it would be to replace the o-rings.
It's not hard provided you're fairly mechanically inclined, and as stated above, if you just do the o-rings I think Riffraff sells them for like $8 an injector.
Here is a link.
Don't be tempted to get them elsewhere because they are cheaper. If they aren't Alliant o-rings they're not saving you anything because you will be doing it again soon....
And again, I would recommend at least testing the glow plugs before you start so you know if they're good or not. You will likely have to pull them anyway in the process of doing the o-rings, you might as well put new ones in there while you're at it. Riffraff has those too. Click here.
