inline 6 300
I have a 1978 Ford f-150 .It has a staight 6 BUT i have been told that it came out of a delivery truck . I went to get some parts distrubuter cap , rotor etc etc and when i got home the parts were not the correct one's and when i confronted the automotive place of purchase they said i really need to find out what kind of motor i have because something is not right their computer tells them that i have the correct parts??? This is what i have come up with so far . It is a straight 6 it has a larger oil pan and a tranny cooler on it . Is there any identification marks or numbers on it that will tell me exactly what i have .???
Thanks ,
Todd
is it the stock motor? if so you can take the VIN # each number and letter represent something.
example C6TE - AA
this represents a 1976 truck engine ... this info location is applicable to the 240 and 300 cid inline sixes (it will also apply to the earlier sixes but I wouldn't know the location of the numbers)
if your trans id still stock then it will most likely be a 240/300 (they are same block but differ internally)
Once you locate the casting numbers post it and we can determine the yaer of your ignition system ... there were a number of changes made since the 70's
Underside of the exhaust manifold PASSENGER SIDE cast into it is:
D4TE-9(8?)425-DA ( that 9 could be an 8 ) if it matters i will have to get in there some how with a mirror and try to see if i can get a better view of it .
Driver's side there is a 5 cast into the block towards the back by the tranny kinda underneather the distributor cap but back farther.it has a one barrel carb
firing order is 153624 (if that matters ?)
Valve cover sticker has:
D6TE-9C485-AKB
ENGINE FAMILY 300
Thanks for all the help with this !!!!

differences -
Duraspark I - one piece small socket style cap, fender mounted ignition module
Duraspark II - two piece wide plug terminal style cap, fender mounted ignition module
Duraspark I & II ignition modules will fit either distibutor so they may have a D-I distributor with your D-II ignition box .... It's actually what I'm using myself
TFI-IV - one piece socket style cap, small module mounted to the side of the ditributor.

... of course this fails to explain the brain fart on my previous post (C6TE would imply a '66 engine block) I was just going to repost and explain the prefix implies a '74 engine not an '84. tanks for settin' me straight
The prefixes code in this manner -
C = '60's
D = '70's
E = '80's
(most 90's 300 castings will have 70's and 80's casting numbers anyway, but I would once again assume the standard prefix F would imply a 90's block if they exist, the 300 was discontinued in '96)
another gem for the dusty (and sometimes rusty
) drawer of ford facts in the back of my brain. My guess would be to try the Duraspark I cap (as I said, bring your originals for comparo) if they don't match try an earlier '74 cap ... just use any F-series if they bother to ask for the truck type, tranny, how many bolts on the left side front quarter turn signal mounting tab, you know, all that highly relevant info
Sorry for any confusion folks
