The motor should be running and in park. If start mine cold I like to shift into drive and reverse before putting it back into park and checking the fluid. This ensures all the needed fluid is sucked back up into the working parts after draining into the sump overnight.
If your trans hasn't been rebuilt I would suggest F-type fluid, if it has then Dex III is fine.
Thoroughly warm it up and check it, with the engine running, in park or neutral. Type F is the stuff you need to use. Did they change the clutch composition to use Dextron?
Don't mean to hijack a thread or anything, but the topic is up so I thought I might ask a quick question:
Should shifting into Drive feel immediate? With my C6, if I shift into drive (brakes off), it takes a good 2-3 seconds or so to engage and begin driving forward (if no gas is given). I'm thinking that it isn't in good health...

Hot and cold? It should happen sooner but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I assume it's not a fresh rebuild.
