C6 parking brake
1978 F-150 4x4 351M C6
Park will not engage. Soon I am going to adjust the bands and replace a cooler line and would like to know what I am looking for when I go under to see if I.can't get "Park" back in my trucks life.
Thanks for any info or tips...
Usually the reason park wont engage is because either the linkage is out of adjustment or there is wear in the linkage.
It's a purley mecahnical set up and usually doesn't have any problems.
Here is an illustration of the internals of the park gear. The two main components are the gear (7A233) and the pawl (7A441).
If wear is the problem, look at where the shift rod attaches to the arm of the transmission. The hole in the trans arm can wear oval shaped and the small stud that connects the arm to the linkage can wear also.
Here are a couple of pictures of the trans arm and stud to show how they wear.

Bolted to the bottom of the upper steering column flange is a half moon shaped detent aka shift gate. The tab on the shift lever fits in between the individual gates.
What happens to it: People put the shift lever into Park before setting the hand brake, causing the truck to roll...just enough...that the parking pawl inside the trans locks up tight.
When this occurres, the shift lever has to be YANKED out of Park, and sooner or later, the individual gate between Park and Reverse snaps off.

Without the gate, when the shift lever is placed into Park, it will slip out...into Reverse. Not Pleasant!
1973/79 F100/350: There are three different detents:
1) D2TZ-7A216-A = 1973/77 F100/350 & 1975/77 Econoline / Obsolete ~ 6 available NOS
2) D8TZ-7A216-A = 1978/79 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline without tilt wheel / Obsolete ~ 58 available NOS
3) D8TZ-7A216-B = 1978/79 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline with tilt wheel / Obsolete ~ 7 available NOS
Working on a timing cover gasket on my Dodge at the moment, so a lil tight on space and time. Might try to find a C6 for sale and have it rebuilt.
You guys have to see it... Can't believe every mile it goes.
