I just bought a 1999 F350 Crew Cab Lariat 6.8l V10 2wd auto with 143,000 miles. Truck periodically starts running rough and shifting real hard for no apparent reason. Problem usually goes away if truck is turned off and restarted, but it always comes back. Codes indicated a bad electronic speed sensor but the problem continued after that was replaced. Repair records from previous owner indicate same problem in the past that was apparently corrected by replacing the electronic speed sensor. Mechanic thinks the ECU is bad. I would really appreciate any ideas/suggestions. Thank you.
Often a code for a speed sensor really means that there is a wiring issue between the sensor and the ECU. It isn't impossible that the ECU is bad, but it is unlikely.
thanks for the input. How might a problem like that be identified? Is it something that is typically located by visual inspection (as in melted or damaged wires)?
Sometimes you get lucky and can see the damaged area. Usually you need some fancy test equipment to find it. First thing to do is see if the circuit is electrically open or shorted to either ground or power. If it is, you could just run a new wire.
FYI. I just crawled under the truck and located a section of the wiring harness that got stuck between the body and the frame when the two were mated at the factory. There appears to be some potential damage to some of the wires so I am going to fix it and see if the problem corrects. Thank you very much for your help.
