When I drive at speeds of 90kph (55mph) or more, my truck will begin to run rough, loose speed and blow black smoke from the exaust for periods of 10-30 seconds at a time.
This first happened to me while driving home from Ottawa (7hrs away) after having to change my transmission.
I read the codes and got:
33 - EGR Valve fault / not closing properly
and
29 - Insufficient input from the Vehicle Speed Sensor
Have you run the pinpoint tests for the codes? If you don't have them I could scan them from my 1988 Ford manual and email them to you. Also make sure the fuel pressure regulator isn't leaking.
I found the vehicle speed sensor disconnected, so I plugged the harness back in. This has not solved my problem.
I did the Key-On-Engine-Running test tonight and got a new code in addition to #33:
41 - HEGO (H20S) sensor voltage low / system lean
Is that the oxygen sensor? It may have been banged around when the transmission was being changed out, and it got wet too. The y-pipe that holds the sensor was full of water when we went to put it back on, because it rained a lot while I was in Ottawa.
We replaced the oxygen sensor and the code is gone now. I'm still having the problem though. In fact, it is a lot worse now. The truck has got an appointment at our local dealer tomorrow. Hopefully it won't cost me too much!
It's 6:15 and you are home from work already?!?! And you have an appointment tomorrow? That means you are taking the day off?!?! I would highly suspect your main supervisor is gone from work and you are slacking it up!! Anyways, good luck on your truck and hopefully it doesn't cost too much! There's no place like to "stealership" to spend your paycheck!!
Well I don't know any more!
I've replaced the O2 Sensor, fixed the speed sensor, cleaned the IAC, replaced the MAP sensor and had the coolant temp sensor replaced. The dealer even checked the fuel pressure regulator for me and said it's fine and there is nothing wrong with the fuel pressure. Each time I do something, the truck runs fine long enough for me to think it's finally fixed, and then oh, look! it's doing it again.
The only code left is the one about the EGR valve. It has not been connected to the manifold since I got the truck, so I don't think that it would have just started causing trouble now.
This guy with the problems is my friend so I know what he is gonna ask. He is gonna say "What the heck is a FPR??" LOL! Seriously! I don't know even know so can you tell me what it is. I know he just got all brand new exhaust from (and including) his catalytic convertor back so that couldn't be his problem unless when they replaced the tranny they didn't put it back on properly! MMmmmm? Thanks Ken!
While I was at work, I had my dad look at everything that you had mentioned. He found nothing wrong.
No gas in the vacuum line on the FPR.
No exaust leaks
and the wires to the O2 sensor looked fine, no visible damage due to pinching, burning, etc.
To top it all off, the truck has been running great for the past 2 days now! It was causing trouble one night after I filled up with gas, the next day it ran fine. When I fill it up again, I will see if it is still using too much gas, but until then everything seems to be working fine. Hopefully it will stay that way.
Beast12: This supports our theory of Fords fixing themselves!
Well, it's been almost a week since I had any problems. I still have no idea what caused my trouble, but everything seems to be back to normal.
I did have a fuel filter that was rusted out so bad that it started leaking through a rust hole, but that's the only trouble I've had since my last post.
