I posted in the FE but not much traffic there. In my 74 I assumed it was the original engine, but now am wondering. The heads are C8AEH. I was told these are 1968 heads. Are the serial #s for engine ID behind the starter?? My fuel pump went out and I got the one for a 1974 f 100 which looked different(had a canister on the bottom) put it on seems to be working OK???
There is no way to tell for sure if that's the original engine. With a few exceptions Ford never put VIN or serial numbers on the engines.
Your engine should have originally come with D2TA heads. It could be the original block that someone replaced the heads or the engine could be a replacement.
There are date castings that would give an idea on when the block was cast but thats all.
To read Ford casting numbers: c-1960 d-1970 e-1980 and so on. c8 is 1968 d0 is 1970 and so on. last two letters are the application it was cast for. I have the information in a magazine or a tech manual somewhere look for post later.
C8AE heads were installed on 1968/71 F100/350 360/390 & misc 1968/71 Passenger Car 390's.
And you may find these heads on some 1964/67 352/390 engines as this head was the 'service part replacement' for the one used on some 1964/67 cars & 1965/67 F100/350's.
Plus, Ford authorized (or not) engine rebuilders would install any 'ol heads they had layin' around. So you might find a C5AE head on one side, a D2TE head on the other.

Last two letters of casting number prefixes have nothing to do with applications.
Casting numbers on heads, blocks and etc are foundry marks only. Cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers. Are usually worthless for ID'ing the engine size or what it's from.
Since all FE engines were cast as 352's, the foundry marks pertain only to them. Many FE blocks have 352 cast onto them. Does this mean the engine is a 352? Maybe yes, but probably no.
And, FoMoCo is in-famous for replacing 10's of 1000's of part numbers EVERY Year! So, people should not go by part number prefixes to ID what the part fits or what vehicle it was used in.
