I looked for an hour all over the place and it seems there are many different ways to I.d a fe block. What I think I have is a 352?
On the side of the block CAST into it behind the oil filter adapter I found a large V, below it CAST was what appeared to be 5D5. On the same side on the machined engine boss above the oil filter was STAMPED what looked like 5D7V1 or 5D7VI. On the front of the block was CAST 21 and 352. The heads were CAST what looked like C8AE, and 8090C. I know it prolly dont mean squat, but it has Merc valve covers?
Thanks, Todd
This is in a hi-boy(3/4 ton, divorced t-case, blocks in the rear, ears for bumpstops on the back) frankentruck so I know it is a transplant! Maybe
LOL Transplant is most likely. It was pretty common practice to order up a 390 to replace a worn out 360. These engines used to be common as warts on a frog, every rebuilder had something ready to go out the door.
Your block was cast 4/5/65, the head's date code is under the valve cover, just above the casting number. The head numbers you already posted don't zactly jive with the limited resources I use. Maybe you can post a pic?
As for which engine you have: Time to bite the bullet and measure the stroke. I had a 360 turn into a 390 after a stroke check. Closer examination also revealed that I had large port C6AE-R heads instead of the C8AE-H heads I would expect to find under the grime of a 360.
Do the head casting numbers mean anything to you? I wonder if the 8 on the head casting was a 6 instead. Kinda hard to read. Is the only way to tell a 352 is to measure the stroke? I guess the 352 360 and 390 were the same casting? Later milled to a different bore for the 360 and 390? This is so confusing.
The characters cast in the heads can be difficult to read.
An FE block cast at the Dearborn Iron Foundry will likely have 352 cast in the front. An FE block cast in the Michigan Casting Center would have a reverse image 105 cast in the same area.
The sticky at the top explains the crank and bore specifications for different displacements. I would not tear down an engine to measure bore unless I had a 3.98" stroke, or features common to a 427 block.
There are C3AE-6090-C heads. These are early 390 lowriser heads. Is there a casting number on the intake? Like Hyp said they can be hard to read. Sometimes slurred and filled in which makes them hard to read. If you ever have a valve cover off there is a 3-4 digit date code between the center 2 valvesprings. Sometimes the date code can help figure what the casting number is by knowing the year. Certain heads were cast for so many years before being changed/revised to a new number.
