400 hp out of a 460 is less than 1 hp per CI. It is far less taxing on the engine than doing 400 hp out of a W series engine.

Don't be sorry, no reason for it. It's your truck and only you know what you really need.

Traction issues can be overcome in many ways. That would be my last concern.

I look for best bang for the buck, and if you want around 400hp and you are starting from scratch a bigblock will give you that pretty easy, probably cheaper.

That's a weak combo... build the 351W into a 408 stroker for some real torque.

If you work in a junkyard, find something cool, like a twin cam 4.6 or a 5.0 Coyote.

It doesn't matter if it's a big block or small block, that truck will have traction issues at 400hp. My truck has traction issues at 180hp.
I'll side with those saying a 460 is the key, although a 400 crank shoehorned into a 351c block, with small chamber heads might be a fun thing.

Thats what I would suggest as well. Bigger is not always better. If I was going for a moderate build, I would go with a 390 (335 HP head motor if you can find one) for a simple "sounds good" motor and have some grunt to it. For a strip racer yeah go with a big cubic inch motor, which i dont think I would start with one of these trucks for that to begin with.

If I was going to build a motor for one of these trucks to have "fun" with, I would build a 351W anyday over a 289/302 or a big block. Turning a small block 9000 RPM's can be a rush. Clevelands are good if built right, but for the same cubic inch gets crappy gas mileage compared to a windsor. Besides, a 1969 351W came with 290 HP, so you dont have far to go to achieve 400HP.....the right cam selection and worked heads (thats the key) and you will get 400HP. If you work at a salvage yard and can get things chaeper, than you are already ahead of the game! Everyone has different opinions, so like mentioned earlier, just do some research and narrow it down to what you want to accomplish with your truck and motor combination.
