A little help with this series engine .....
I am thinking of installing a 460 in my 78 Bronco to replace the current 351M. It has a week 351M and week C6 trans right now, they need an major upgrade.
I should be able to handle the logistical stuff .... motor mounts, flywheel and etc. My problem is I know nothing about this engine type. I have some experience with the 335 series engine, but know very little about this one.
I want to build a low end torque power plant with a flat torque curve from 1000-4000 RPM. I would like high 400's as peak torque. HP should peak at 5000-5500 RPM and I am thinking of 350ish HP. My goal is to use as much stock hardware as possible and maintain and much reliabilty as possible.
Looking for a "junkyard" 400 I have turned down several 460's ( 6 to be exact ) and I am sick of looking for the 400. I need to know what to look for in a "core engine" for my truck. I also need to know what type of budget I will need for this project. I mean just the engine ... not the installation part. I figure a 400 rebuilt to match the numbers I am looking at would run me about $2200 .... if I did all the wrench work. What can I get in a 460 or 429 for that kind of money, provided I have nothing to start with and a core will run me about $300.
Thanks
