Hey guys Im going to be servicing my transmission this weekend. I think im experincing a converter shudder. I saw recomendations of draining the conveter but Im not sure how you would do that without removing the converter from the transmission?
Take the shield between the bell housing and engine off. Have someone spin the engine at the crankshaft while you are under the truck looking at the TC. There is a drain plug on it you will see come around. Stop the drain on the bottom and remove plug.
If so you should find a rubber plug in the bottom center of the bell housing, remove it and then slowly rotate the main shaft until the TC drain plug comes into view just above that access hole.
I say should because I not sure all years offered the TC drain and if not which year it was standard.
Oh ok that makes sense and seems easy enough. Thanks guys. When I get done and fill it up is there anything I need to do to prime the TC?
Myself I added 6 quarts then started it up, ran the shifter throughout the gear range couple times then shut it down added 4 more repeat until full enough to allow to idle continuously. Maybe didn't need to shut it off to add more first couple times? felt better about it doing so, didn't want it running dry sucking air.
I did not attempt to make it move until I had 15 quarts in, made it move back and forth a few feet and only if wanted to, then adjusting for full from there.
That's "approximate" fill from empty, give you an idea how much to have on hand for the job. Its from my "haynes" manual and was very close for my 4x4's. IIRC 17 quarts and they where full, I didn't drain the coolers, trucks both have two.
I have been looking online for some info on this shutter and I noticed that some people are suggestsing using a shutter fix additive? Any one know if this is worth it? Also what about the line pressure kits or the kits for the shuter?
If a fresh complete refill of ATF doesn't take care of the shudder I seriously doubt a bottle of "magic" juice will do any thing except lighten your wallet...
sounds good thanks guys. If a new filter and fluid change dosnt help would a shift kit help? You know the kind that increases the pressure and says they help converter shudder?
