Still having real bad exhaust smoke problems untill the truck is warm. I understand that there is a relay in glow plug circuit that could be at fault. Where is this relay located?
I don't think the relay is the problem. The relay just turns on the glow plugs for 2 min. then turns them off. Are you losing coolant or burning a bit of oil? Smoke in the exhaust when you get on the throttle with turbo boost is unburnt fuel. What exactly are the cold conditions. Unless it is below freezing, my truck doesn't smoke.
Thanks for the replies. Here is a bit of history on how/when this started. I only use this truck on weekends, and it is used to pull a 40' gooseneck race car trailer. Two weeks ago we left the shop here in Plano TX to go to Muskogee OK. About 30 miles north of here, stopped and filled at a Loves, in McAllester OK stopped and topped off the tank at a Texaco truck stop. (we make this trip on a regular basis and usually get fuel at these same places) Got to Muskogee, was there from about 5pm untill Midnight, when I started the truck to leave is when started smoking - it was not cold outside at all, I would guess still in the 70's. Once the temp gauge got above the "C" it quit smoking and ran fine. Stopped in McAllester at the same place, topped off the tank. Started it there - no smoke, motor was still warm -- drove non stop back to Plano. Gauges all read normal, usual amount of power, same fuel mileage, etc.
The next day when I started it after it sat, it smoked. No loss of coolant, motor oil is fine. I drained and changed the fuel filter and filled the bowl with Lucas conditioner. I went to a local station here in town and put in some fresh fuel and treated it with Lucas. Went to local track here in Dallas area Saturday nite, same thing, really bad smoke untill it warms up.
The closest dealer that will service the truck for me is about 40 miles away, that is why I was hoping to be able cure it myself. Looking at the paperwork from the last time it was in for service in late August 2002, it had the injector o-rings replaced at that time. The current mileage is at 49,489 and I have done all the routine maint. myself since I bought it with 9,000 miles on it.
I am looking at buying a 2000 crewcab with the powerstroke that did the exact same thing as IM23 described. I would really appreciate any replies on what would be the cause and if I should go ahead with the purchase.
I ended up taking it to the dealer. It turned out to be bad injectors. Truck is still under the 5yr 100,000 mile warranty, so the out of procket cost was a total of $100. It is fine now, in fact it seems to run better than when it was new.
