hmmm... another cps issue?

OK, had a 7.3 about 3 months, not I'm asking about CPS problems. If I can get one locally for a reasonable price I'll replace tommorow.

One to my issue... long story but I'll make it as short as possible as it may be relavant.

'00 f350 7.3 AT, 95k miles.
Installed banks ottomind, no performance improvement but motor died once, so I remove the chip and it started back up and ran fine.
Tried different banks chip, again no performance increase but after a few days the motor died again. Removed chip and it ran fine.
Borrowed a friends Edge Programmer, worked great, no problems. Returned programer after a week.
At this point I suspect connection of the chip, so I reclean the ecu connection, and reinstall one of the banks chips... again, no performance increase, but intermitantly the motor dies, always under moderate power and early in the warmup cycle (first 5-10 minutes of run time).
Getting upset now, so I polish the heck out of the ecu connections. Order up a DP chip.
Chip arrives, 5 minute install, ready to go. Everything looks good till about 10 minutes into run, then truck cuts out under acceleration. Keeps running so I make a note of it and keep going.
Next morning truck dies on me, starts back up right away.
Next morning display on DP tuner dies, tune returns from stock. Display later comes to life and resumes working.
Weekend trip... 650 miles w/ 11k goose. Many stumbles, felt like either random shift attempts or stumbles... basically a 'stumble' but truck never dies.
Yesterday - high horsepower setting after warmup, stumbling/bucking under hard acceleration, followed by truck dying. SES 'intermediate CPS signal' Startup normal.
Today - stock setting, short warmup, bucking and dying, SES 'intermediate CPS signal'. instant restart. Shortly thereafter dying during normal cruise, restart while coasting (push-start style), died again and restarted, coasted to pulloff. I noticed while coasting that the RPM was still reading 500-1000 rpm (torque converter still locked up). Got a SES ' 'intermediate CPS signal' and a SES 'CPS malfunction'
I restarted several times, would only run for a few feet then die again. Removed DP chip, died once again. Let it sit a while, drove it home w/o issues.

Whew... sorry for that novel.
So, anyone know if a chip can cause a CPS code?
Can a bad ECU connection cause a CPS code?
Sound like a familiar CPS problem?

Thanks for any help!!

I would start by replacing the CPS. Sure sounds like it's the culprit. I have seen a few do some intermittent things, even without setting a code.

I agree with mueckster on the cps starting point. Need a spare anyway in order to troubleshoot. Check ebay, they can be had in 3 days for about $60 shipped.

Based on what I have read, it may be possible to over clean the ecu pin connectors. All instructions I have seen have cautioned against removing too much. If it runs flawlessly without a chip installed, but symptoms reappear with a chip, I'm no detective, but I know where I would be looking.

Yeah, thats what I'm worried about....
What recourse do I have if thats the case? Anything other than replacing the ECU?
If the CPS doesn't solve it maybe I'll try re-tinning the board... scary...
