Voca and Mike, thanks for the info, I am confused on the "relay", looks factory, has a 3pin connector going to it, when turning on park lights it clicks once, headlights clicks once, when the gremilin comes out and lights flash on and off this relay clicks in conjunction with the lights, when it acting up I unplugged this connector, clicking stopped but lights still would go on and off on there own.
I will keep tryi ng to find my gremlin,
Thanks
Jeff
still trying to figure no turn signals, will not work, has power to new flasher, hazzards work
been checking for worn, warm wires, not finding anything
I hate electrical gremlins
BMS5600
thanks for info, not clearn on phase grounding? has new socket r/r, p/o changed to later modle lamp r/r, still has 73 lamp on l/r, maybe will cut wire and replace with later modle lamp?
Thanks again for info-ideas
Jeff
Well on my 78, the tail lights have 1157 dual filament bulbs (2leads, 1ground per filament) and the reverse lights have a single filament bulb(1 ground, 1lead) if corrosion or muck builds up in the socket the voltage or ground can phase within the socket not allowing enough current for both tail light and turn signal to function. Good luck.
starting to make headway, found loose nut behind steering wheel, oh wait that was me!!!
nine wires from turn signal switch, wires on new switch very easy to tell what colors are what, original dash harness is faded, have not cut back insulation to see correct colors, moved 2 wires around now have a right and constant blinking left, just need more time to mess with truck, between work and very pregnant wife, not much time, 3 minutes here, 10 minutes there
Jeff
Do you have access to a wiring diagram? That is the best way to trace out the gremlins, I did auto electric for years, one thing I did learn, was that I hated the gremlins.
update
new turn signal switch installed, still no operation. replaced turn signal flasher, still inop. hazzards work fine, all lights illuminate, hazzards off, brake lights work, running lights work. fuse on fuse block for turn signals is good.
also strange situation, truck was running with headlights on, headlights and running lights would flicker on and off, turned off engine, lights would still flicker on and off and headlamp relay would click on and off.
guess the truck is possesed!!
looking for ideas suggestions, not able to find any shorted-melted wires
Thanks
I would follow the wiring harnesses around outside the cab. It sounds like a wire has rubbed it's way through somewhere and is grounding out.
I'm still not clear on the "relay" that you mention in post #16. Fords of this vintage do not use relays in the headlight circuit.
Like Idbill39 mentioned, a schematic can be your best friend in this kind of situation. Go here:1973-1979 Ford Truck Wiring Diagrams & Schematics - FORDification.net for copies of the FACTORY wiring schematic. They don't have the '73 diagrams yet, but for this you can use the '74 diagrams. For lighting (and most everything else) '73 & '74 are the same.
Mike
thanks for posting the schematic. the relay or circuit braker is bolted to the dash via bracket, to the right of the windshiled wiper switch, not part of headlamp switch, not really sure what to call it, I just know that is with click when turning on headlamps
Jeff
I still can't figure out what that relay is.
Here's an illustration from the Ford parts catalog. Let me know if you see the relay. To see the F series, scroll to the bottom half of the page.
I just had a thought, do you have the roof mounted marker lights? There's a relay for them under the dash.
Mike it looks like #13853, truck has no roof lights or ever had roof lights
Thanks
Jeff
You're looking at the top drawing, that's Econoline van. The lower drawing is the F series. That drawing doesn't show a relay.
The 13853 relay in the Econloline illustration is the horn relay. On your truck the horn relay is mounted on the passenger side splash pan, between the battery and starter solenoid. I'm really clueless as to what that relay could be .
