broken tranny!
1992 F-350 7.3L IDI e4od tranny, rwd 4.10
today, i pulled up our laneway, stopped in drive, then went to pull around the barn with a little bit of throttle, and BAM!! went the tranny. no drive or reverse afterward.
i'm going to pull the tranny in the morning, but i'd like to see if any of you have had the same problem. park works. all other gear selections are neutral.
when engine is running (in any gear, even park) i hear a whirring sound coming from mid to front of tranny. shut off the engine, whirring noise winds down, so i'm guessing the problem lies after the torque converter, because the noise doesn't stop immediately with the engine.
fluid levels are fine, pump must be working as level drops to "max hot" when engine is running, then raises again after engine is off.
fluid isn't burnt, and still has color.
pulled the pan to let fluid out, and the filter came out with the pan (not sure if it should have... could this be indictive of excessive fluid pressure or a plugged filter?)
ever since i got the truck, at about 40mph the tranny ranges (if overdrive is not shut off), until i put my foot into it or turn OD off.
also, i've got an intermittant vacuum leak *somewhere*, occasionally at idle i hear the leak start, and the tach drops to zero. this is not constant tho.
anyways, any advice is appreciated.

You say that Park works, do you mean that with the trans in Park the truck can not be pushed forward? If it can be pushed while in Park then the problem is further down the line.
There are some real transmission experts on this site however I am not one of them but if it was me, I think from here I would drain the torque, fit a new OEM filter and fill with fresh fluid.
Like I say, just my opinion.
By the way, there is a very good page here for the pre-powerstroke diesels that you should check out.
Good luck with it, whatever you decide and hopefully someone else will chime in soon.
Good point, perhaps she was low on fluid with the filter sitting low. Also, yes we can push the truck in everything except for park. Park operates normal.
I've heard the pre '95 e4od's had some issues requiring updating, one of which being the TC had a weak output spline, i'm hoping perhaps that's the issue, gonna get some breakfast then go out and attempt to find out.
Thanks
I am no transmission expert but sounds like it is time for a rebuild. Or just 5 speed it!
In Park there is a Paw that engages and locks down the internals so that nothing can move in either direction. King of like a hunk of metal locking in with another hunk of metal so the shaft wont turn.
what tranny should i look for? anybody done the swap?

Lot's and Lot's of work but IMO well worth it.
All the guys on here have a vast knowledge of just about everything in these trucks.
anyways, i picked up a "classifieds buy" replacement e4od out of a 92 fleet short schoolbus, had regular service, looks to have been recently rebuilt (or internal work done, as the pump bolts have sealant around them).
anyways, i got it installed, had to swap my old MLPS sensor as it had a different connector (planning on finding a new one in the near future, those buggers are hard to find around here!)
question: the old tranny had a big "22" on the top of the bellhousing. new one has a "23" ... what's this mean?
anyways, now on to the problems. it seems the dang truck is in limp mode now. the 2 electrical connectors are firmly and properly connected, i cleaned them with contact-cleaner before installation, MLPS is properly aligned to neutral position...
any ideas as to what could be putting it into limp mode? i've got a good strong reverse, but "D" feels like it's stuck in 3rd gear. if i manually put the truck into 2nd i've got a decently strong get-up-and-go, and can shift down into 3rd again. not sure if TC is locking up though. first gear does not seem to be present at all.
i've only done a couple quick runs up and down the street to test everything.
i did a pan-off fluid and filter, blew out the cooler lines, etc., fluid level is up to snuff now,.
AAHHHHHH. help?
problem ended up being (AFTER replacing my MLPS, FIPL and RPM sensor... not a bad idea, but didn't solve the "computer-related" problem) that the tranny solenoid pack was NO GOOD!
finally figured out how to pull the ecm codes with a jumper and LED (since my freakin' "check-engine" lamp is burned out), and i got codes 92 92 93 94 and 99, so i marched straight over to the shredded e4od i pulled out of the truck, yanked out the solenoid pack, then proceeded to coat myself in new tranny oil (most of which i recovered and filtered then re-used).
fired 'er up, and took 'er for a drive. now i know how my truck SHOULD have been shifting all along. ever since i've owned it it's always shifted really hard, now she's smooth as a dream.
anyways, thanks for all the insight guys, i'm sure i'll be poking around the site here and there, perhaps somebody will run into this same problem and this post will help them out.
