Need help delay going into drive and reverse

I just bought a 2007 f250 6.0 I test drove it had it looked at and everything seemed fine. For the last few days now it has been giving me a delay going into drive or reverse on the first start after that everything is fine. I have searched and did see the tsb for the pressure valve in the tranny but it was not for my year truck. I stopped by the dealership and the guy who obviously didn't care checked the fluid and said it looked good. He said he would just live with it but I don't want to do that. Any help would be appreciated my wife is about to kill me over the thought of a new transmission within a week of owning this truck.. I have done all my own work on my trucks but never any transmission stuff besides fluid and filter.

From my experience a slow engagement of gears is usually caused by low pressure (tired pump, bad fluid, clogged filter)... Once it goes into gear does it shift fine???First thing I would do is check the fluid level... If that is up to par.. I would then drop the pan and drain as much of the fluid as I could( I believe there is a method to get alot more than the 7-8 qts you normaly get by just dropping the pan) I would change both filters and refill with the correct Tranny fluid...

It does shift fine besides the first shift.

How many miles are on it? When was the last tranny service??? If it shifts fine and doesn't slip in between shifts...I would guess that a tranny service should fix your problem...I will try to explain to you as it was explained to me by a tranny shop...As a weak pump will show as slippage while shifting (1-2-3-4 ect).. A dirty passage in the valve body can slow engagement from drive to reverse..And not effect shift points..Either way it always a safe bet to service tranny before anything else...As a tiny piece of debris can realy mess things up....

Thank you I will try that should I take it in for a full flush or will the pan and filters be good. Unknown on miles between changes the fluid is bright pink and does not smell burnt. The truck has 95000 miles on it.

The filter inside the pan is to keep branches and large debris from going through the tranny. There is an external filter up near the front of motor. Passenger side of motor. That filter is what you should replace if you want to do this yourself.

If you think you would rather have it flushed, just make sure the flush system they use is a heated flush. The tranny has a "T' stat in it. If it is a cold flush, you might as well get some 8 quarts of Mercon LV and drain the fluid out the drain plug, change external filter and be done with it.

Here is a good place for your filter purchases:

Ford 6.0 Liter Turbo Diesel Truck Filters, Air Filters, Oil Filters, Transmission Filters And Glow Plugs - Diesel Filters,Additives, brake rotors, and brake pads for Chevy, Dodge and Ford Diesel Trucks

The Racor filters are motorcraft filters. Save the coin and get them. The tranny filter looks like a very tight roll of toilet paper, save the money and buy the NTZ, they make the motorcraft ones.

I wouldn't trust the PRIME GAURD filters. Just don't know just how good those really are.

If they have a heated straight tranny flush it might be worth it... But bare in mind some places do a reverse flush and from what I have been told you want to avoid that as it loosens everything up and can cause even more headaches... There is a method posted here somewhere that shows how to do a good flush and empty the converter at home... Fluid color(dark red) and smell(if the clutch packs were in fact slipping it would smell burnt) is a good indicator but like I stated earlier a small spec of debris in just the right place can wreak havoc on the way it functions....Service the tranny (at home if you can) and let us know how you make out... I bet it fixes your problem... Dont forget to use the correct fluid which is very important...

I just want to say it again... Make sure they don't do a reverse flush( which has become very common at those speed oil change places) as that tends to loosen everything up and send all the crap that has settled since the tranny has been in service all over the place...

Last I had it done the dealer charged a little under 200 bucks for a heated flush and frame mounted filter change. I think that's the best way to go in your case since you don't really know when yours was serviced last.

Thanks for all the help. I will make sure to go to the dealer if I have it flushed. I don't really mind it I just didn't want to leave it if it was going to mess more things up I had a 7.3 f350 before this one. After reading these forums I am more worried every time I hear a noise that the tranny is just going to fall out and the head gaskets are just going to blow. I know this is not going to happen I work on a ambulance and have drove these 6.0 since 03 and 7.3 before that and can honestly say we have had just as many issues from the 7.3 as the 6.0.

So just an update I had my transmission flushed at the dealership today 250.00 later there is still a delay. I did talk to the guy that did it and he said there was a small amount of metal on the filter but he said it was the normal amount and there was nothing out of place he did say that my pressure was at 6 and he had to wait for it to build because the machine will not run until it hits 10. They said it could be a solenoid or something but he did not know so any ideas would be great.
