If you are in TN, as I am, my experience has been pretty easy dealing with the DMV. I got a Title for my '56 with an affidavit signed by a police officer, who only checked the door plate vin. (full disclosure, the police officer was my friend). After that affidavit, they didn't ask questions. I also got the title to my '65 with a rubbing from the door plate.
I don't think you'll have any problems since you have a clear title. I would probably get a new door plate with the matching vin from your title, and just move on. (still a good idea to check for the vin on the rails though).
As I said earlier, you will hear a lot of "facts" that may or may not be applicable to you in TN. Do your homework to see what the TN DMV requires...but one thing that will surely "ease your pain" is a data plate with the correct info stamped on it that hass been properly mounted on the door jamb. I don't know who you are speaking with regarding a new data plate but I recommend Midfifty as a reliable source. A copy of your paperwork and the data that you want stamped is all you need (besides the $125 that is)...here's a copy of the page from their catalog for your reference:
I knew that there was another "direct" vendor but lost the link. I looked at this website and didn't see any sign that he actually provided the plate itself. I seem to recall someplace that you could buy the plate without the stamping, not sure why you would want it that way unless you were handy with reverse stamping yourself. If this guy provides the plate and can turn it around in only 3 days for $25 less then that's an easy choice to make.
Perhaps I should clarify...I don't actually know if he makes the plates or not. An internet search shows that the consensus is he does. The only thing that could lead one to believe so from his website is "Tag Restoration Since 1982". He doesn't seem to offer any other service or parts, so I believe it is safe to assume, however, it is an assumption nonetheless! My query to him was to get a new plate made with a change made on the transmission, not a restoration of my original, which he said he could accommodate. The only thing that couldn't be changed was the actual VIN number.
