I just bought a '47 Ford Pickup that did not come with a title. The Bill of sale does not have the VIN on it and the VIN on the old registration is 161964E104207 which makes no sense at all from what I've been reading about old Ford VIN's.
The truck appears to have the original engine (59AB stamped into the head) and tranny.
Could someone kindly tell me where I would find the VIN.
Looks like you have a replacement title - at some point the title was lost and your state issued a substitute.
They may or may not have required the new title number to be stamped into the frame.
The original vin is likely on the top of the frame rail somewhere in the engine compartment, and likely under the cab also. You might also look at the flange of the transmission for a stamped vin.
It will look something like this for a V8 799C123456
For a 6 cylinder 71GC123456
Thanks for the reply. I'll check out the areas you mentioned.
The truck was last registered in NY, but I live in MA (where EVERYTHING is complicated) so I'm trying to get things in order before I even attempt to go to the RMV (DMV).
I'm trying to bring the truck back to original as much as possible, including getting it PROPERLY titled (if that's even possible now).
The VIN on the '47 is stamped in only one place on the frame. Look on the driver's side frame rail, in front of where the cab mounts to the frame. It should be stamped right above the steering box mount. If it's a '47 frame it'll start 71GC for a 6 cyl, and 799C for a V8. The VIN was also sometimes stamped on the top of the bellhousing of the transmission, look under the trans access plate in the floor. And yes, you have a replacement VIN number.
No problem Ernie. Your VIN breaks down as such:
799C= 1947 1/2 ton pickup with V8
1619640= the number for the truck as it came down the line. There is no other info that can be found in the VIN's for these trucks. Hope this helps you some Ernie.
Gary thanks for decyphering the VIN for me, but now I'm in a bit of a quandry.
Not that it really matters I guess, but the truck was sold to me as a 3/4 ton and has the eight foot box and heavier leaf sprngs I would have expected to find on a 3/4 ton. So what do I register it as?
