I have seen similar pics like this before, but sense I was changing the filter I thought I would do this test to see how dirty the old one was. I was shocked it looks terrible, I wonder how much the air flow is restricted.
New never used filter on right. Filter on left has been in use for 2 1/2 years (less than 5000 miles though) No Riffraff filter cover used
This is the new filter that was on the right with a 100 watt light bulb inside.
This is the old filter that was on the left with the same 100 watt bulb inside.
This is a pic of how I set it up there was no other light in the room.
It is a low micron rating filter and just think if your filter wasn't black then all that would go into your motor. I've got about 10k on mine and I air compress it out every now and again. Probably will just buy a new one here soon since it is cheap insurance.
I would like to find a good simple way to test air flow / and compare with dirty and new filters. I under stand the concept that a dirty filter will will filter better than a new or cleaned filter, cleaning a filter could cause damage if not very careful. Dirty filters could cause restricted air flow and that's not the reason we use the 6637.
Very good and simple test, I liked it, Im going to check mine in that way. BTW how well does the little stock cylindric plastic part that is attached to the intake box (I dont remember its name right now) works?, I have been thinking to install it in my filter or in the pipe of the intake if it is worth. IDK
Jose, I wouldn't think that change filter indicator would not work very well because it was made for the stock filter and the 6637 would probably flow more air if it was 50% clogged up.

Reason: Correction
Compressed air is the worst thing you can do to a air filter.
When you blow air through them you open up the fibers/strains which allows more dirt to pass

Mybe you are right, but in reallity I think was made for measure the minimun enougth flow that the engine needs, IDK.

Yeap thats the name and its function, but it will work well with the 6637 or even with the stock filter?, thats the question.

Good point Mike, IIRC I've heard that before too. My furnace guy blew out mine when he cleaned the furnace but it was an expensive filter (supposed to last about a year) so I thought it was smart of him to do that, save money?
I've got a filterminder in my intake tube, and it hasn't sucked down. I've also had the same filter on for about a year and a half. It kinda makes me wonder if it is working, well on second thought I tested it before I installed it and it was woking. I guess my filter is still flowing plenty of air. What are ya'll paying for a 6637 now adays?

How did you test your filterminder?
The first 6337 I got was about 6yrs ago 25, two years later 10 I don' know why, the last one was 40. They were all NAPA gold and purchased at a discount.
here is a 6637 off of a ranch truck I changed, I drove the truck 90 miles to my shop had full power and no black smoke. they would have kept running this filter a lot longer. this truck sees almost only dirt and back country roads. the dirt is what came out tapping it on the floor about 10 times,
this is after I threw it out of the truck and kicked it out of the way a few times.
A new 6637 weighs 2 lbs 8.6 oz.
that dirty one weighed 2 lbs 14.4 oz
5.8 oz of dirt still in it! I probable knocked half that much out just handling it.
Foe the test of the filterminder I just turned the truck on, removed the filter and put a board over the intake. It sucked the minded right down and collapsed my rubber hose. Do ya'll fellas think heavy fog will affect filter life any, my filters are not hydrophobic.
