You replace the inside filter.
The INSIDE filter.

The one that has the foam and cloth over-cover.

Nate, think of your truck as a giant vacuum, would you take the 6637 filter off and replace it with a vacuum hose and then do a mod to install the 6637 as a tail pipe tip filter.
I know that's bad sorry

I was going to try it today but after taking the 'sock' off I remembered that the filter only had 6,700 miles on it. Wash the sock and put it back on.

We'll just yanking your chain Nate, seeing if you have a sense of humor.

I think the K & N would make a better vac cleaner filter and it could be washed and re-used.

For scientific purposes i used 100 watt incandescent.
I still would like to know more about when it would be necessary to replace the filter, miles or in use time. Mine was 2 1/2 years old but only about 5 k miles. According to the light test it appears to me the media must be pretty much plugged up. When I tapped the filter a little on the floor I really had a only a small amount of larger particles fall out. Then I retested with the light test and I found almost no noticeable difference.

That was exactly my point! I wouldn't suggest it and I couldn't imagine that people would do that to their shop vac either.

I don't mind the ribbing, I was actually hoping that I was mistaken in my understanding of how they were doing this. Two, three no's and I guess it is a consensus that I was missing the point! I will have to go back and re-read the thread more carefully. I have a paper element (HEPA) filter on my shop vac that works great, but those things are expensive! It would really be nice to be able to reuse my 6637 for that purpose. I just didn't think that the inside of the 6637 would fit over the basket inside my shop vac. Guess if Glenn can figure it out, I better go back and re-read the article because I must have missed something pretty obvious (like a diagram of how to do it written in crayon or something).

How you like my sense of humor now, Glenn?!

I like it! If I can figure it out Nate, then anybody can figure it out, right? LOL Good come back Nate! The truth is, read carefully now, I said that I 'heard' or 'read' that some guys have used the 6637 for a shop vac. The truth is, I've never done it but will try next time I change one out.

If you read the link I posted above, seems to be very simple, he doesnt mention any brand of a shop vac tho. It doesnt say if he left the stock filter there, but I think its clear that it has to be pulled out and install the 6637.

Yeah I will try it too, but on my shop vac I don't know how it will work. Mine has a "basket" inside it that has to be 8" in diameter. Guess we will see!

The first time I read this post, I thought, "How do you put 6,700 miles on a shop vac?" LOL
