working on my 86 these pics from this writeup shows a spacer(arrow in first pic).my truck and the few i've checked in town don't have it.also any parts listings don't show it.is it good to have for column support??from what i see the metal backing of the signal switch assm is the only thing touching it on the outer edge.
I don't know what it's for, but for column support you need a bearing or bushing inside the metal structure that is attached to the tube, which is mounted to the dash and the rest of the truck. I am assuming the shaft support is inside the metal structure in the picture above.
That piece that the arrow is pointing to is just taking a ride on the shaft, but like I said I don't know what it's for.
the bearings are in good shape ,but just got me wondering about that piece as my parts listings at work don't show it and the columns that i've seen don't have it..but this seems to be a non issue
The self-canceling ring (black with two pins) pops out of the mulit-function switch at times, when they get worn and old. I wonder if the po had an issue like that and put that piece in there to help prevent that. Looks to be a piece of gray pvc cut to fit. I have never seen a part like that in a Ford column either.
There wasn't any such piece in the column in my truck when I rebuilt it a couple of years ago. Did you have to use a puller to take the steering wheel off?
