The entire cooling system will hold about 8 gallons. Thats for my 7.3. I can't imagine the 6.9 would be that much different. Drain the radiator, then find the drain plugs located on the block, one on each side. I wanna say the bolt head is about 1/2", give or take a 1/16" or so. A common mod is to replace the drain plugs with pet***** to make the job that much easier the second time around, but they're not terrible to get at IMO.

Might be a little closer to 7 gallons but you do need 4 gal of anti-freeze and 4 gal of distilled water. The pass. side drain plug is behind the starter, the drivers side is in plain sight. Loosen the plugs as loose as you can get them without leaking, and then take a piece of soft tube that fits over the plug long enough to reach a bucket. put it over the plug, put the other end in the bucket, and squeeze the tube to pinch the plug. Unscrew it while holding the tube to the block, then let the plug run down the tube into the bucket along with the coolant! A piece of 3/4" foam copper pipe insulation available at Home Depot works perfectly.

Good luck,

Mac.
