picked up a pair of 8' tool boxes..probably 300 lbs a piece, needless to say they need some kind of fixture to attatch to and not just right onto bed rail.
id like an expanded steelmesh type headache rack, and probably some type of upper support as well between the boxes.
Im thinking a ladder rack drop in style "cage" with the 6 feet that slide into the bed provisions, connected to the headache rack which is front support... just hashing ideas, ill post a few cad drawings of ideas and you guys tell me which one seems best.
my buddy insisted i raise my truck immediatly and do bottom mount
does anyone know the size of the 6 holes in the bed rail for lader racks? thefront and rear look thicker than the middle, 2x1.5 all around should work? or do i need 2x1 for the middle ones??
but i also kind of regret geting these boxes as theyre just too damn wide! i was ditching my traditional in bed deezee tool box because my bed length went from 8 feet to just over 6 feet so carrying sofas and such id have to keep the gate down and strap em in.
But these are so damn wide they turn my 5 foot wide bed into 4 feet only! now should i simplyjust move them furtherr outwards (since theyre going to be bolted to a whole frame work-i could make em stick out as far as i want to), or should I sell these boxes and make a headache rack integrated withside rails (to use tie straps with) and sit my deezee box ontop?
heres old box:
she lookin big
so heres my old box
and make a rack like this for my old box but have the rails extend all the way so the box sits elevated
or just keep those huge *** boxes make em stick out a bit further?
then i can justify using these mirrors:
All though nice boxes they are to big for a factory bed. I think they're flat bed boxes. If you want side boxes I would get the kind that sit on the bed rail and are partially in the bed.
These are the type your talking about, they sit ontop of the bed rail. Guy before me had em on an '11 f150, but had brackets that bolted inside the bed -i dont want rhat. I want em to take up as little space in the bed at possible. At almost 2 feet wide though, i have close to a foot inside the bed rail, and close to a foot hanging out as well. Tire service guys use this type all the time, but theyre no concerned with bed space so they tuck em in more
heres a service truck i saw with a nive setup, but these boxes are like half the width of mine. His sit inside the bed too mich though, id like
Mine to hang over more. is there some rules how much things on your bed can stick out?

i would contact your local DOT and ask about overhang.
here in Jersey, if it is a "snag hazard" , or sticks out past the wheel wheels it is not allowed.
yeah but if you need the toolboxes for your line of work,it doesn't matter if they're huge looking things.function is the main thing.
im for the flatbed idea too,but those will be fine there.bolt 'em up and work her.
