Over the last few days I put on over 800 miles with my 08 V10. This is the first time in three years the truck has been over the road without a trailer. The trip took me from MN to IN and then back to IA and up to MN.
I filled the truck up four times and my hand calculated MPG saw a high of 13.8 and low of 13.1. This was driving 70-80 MPH. I80 in Iowa is a crazy fast stretch of road, 80 mph plus here for quite a stretch. Saw a trooper move a slow left lane monitor over for the good of the group, that was a first.
I really enjoyed taking the truck on a road trip and it was a joy to drive. I love the instant power that the five star tuning gives it. I have a 93 octane tune loaded but used 89 the whole trip without a knock or other adverse effect. The 70-90 MPH acceleration is amazing and seems like it would cruise endlessly at whatever speed. Endless power when you're used to pulling a 42' GN around.
I was hoping to see 14 MPG and would have if I'd been in less of a hurry. The truck also tuned 60,000 miles on the leg back home. Time to think about doing the plugs. And I need tires as the original Goodyear Wangler ATS 20's are pretty thin in the tread department.
I can do 600 miles going highway, backroads around Washington DC, and some city to Outer Banks from Pittsburgh. 4 adults in cc, 2 dogs and a weeks worth of supplies in the cap and get those numbers or better without tune. I have a heavy foot and the terrain is up and down the entire trip. See as high as 15 and low of 13 for the entire trip. Done it several times.
No tune on an 03 but 3.73 gears. I will averge 10-15mph above the speed limit the entire trip. Highway that is 75-80 average. Wife gets mad faster and I cant go slower than traffic. Allowed to hit 90 at times for a pass but her head will spin if I keep it up. I have been across Iowa and Indiana and they are flat compared to PA, Maryland and Virginia. North Carolina flattens out.
I wonder what you would have had at just 5mph slower. Makes a big difference on mine. Years ago we would do 80+ for trips and not care about milage.

I do not think the tune helps the MPG one single bit, just put in there for reference.
I miss the days when we had a motorhome and would pile the kids in there and head out. Did not even think twice about the 80 gallon fuel tank. Now days I would not even consider taking my GN trailer with a lounge in front further then our 100 mile trip to the race track. You can fly there cheaper and stay in a hotel if you are going to be heading across country.
I think the gear ratio is the big deal on mine. Your 4.10s might be good pulling but are a waste empty. My 99 had 3.73 also and pulled a 40 foot 10,000 load up and down the highway fine. Just at 6-7 mpg. This 03 seen maybe 8000 and gets 7-9 on the hills.

True and I still wish I had 4:30's. I tow about 14,000 pounds most of time and the 4:30's would put me at about 2400 rpm at 70 mph, perfect.
I cruise 75 at 2100ish rpms so the old V10 is barely working.
