I've been having a problem with my 96 Ranger. Its a 3.0 v6 engine. Basically anytime i accelerate around or over 40 mph i get a violent shake that will shake the entire chassis like its coming apart. The truck is slow to accelerate during this and the shaking gets more intense as you accelerate. The second you let off the accelerator the shaking stops but you cannot accelerate again without the shaking continuing. This happened a few months ago and I replaced the EGR and that seemed to fix the problem until a week ago. Any help would be much appreciated.
Do you have a Check Engine Light (CEL) lit up? Even if you don't, you might want to take it into someplace like AutoZone and see if they can scan for codes - I believe 1996 was the first year for OBD-II so, they should be able to scan it with their reader.
If they can pull any codes, post them here and somebody should be able to decipher them and point you in the direction of a solution for that issue.
Also, what's the maintenance history on this truck?
displaying these error codes:
P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire
P1443 Evap emission system containment valve
P0443 Evap Mission System purge control Valve Circuit
Maintenance history
Rebuilt engine completely in 2007
New transmission in 2009
Nothing more than a few minor fixes in the last few year like new head gaskets, new radiator, and replaced EGR valve and sensor 4 months ago.
Also the check engine light flashes when it starts shaking or shortly before.
Rough engine engine under load is usully spark related, so since you have a misfire code for cyl 1, have a look there. Check its plug gap, insulators inside & out for chips & cracks, plug wire for loose fit, cut, chaffed insulation, ect & if no joy, raise the hood after dark & look for arcs & sparks. Maybe do a wet down test of the plug wire with a spray bottle of water to see if you can cause arcs & sparks, or a rough idle.
If still no joy, have a listen to #1 fuel injector to determine if it sounds different that the others. If not then do a compression test on #1 cyl & let us know how it goes.
