Alright i have a 73 429, with a small 350cfm 2bbl on it (temporary) if i push the pedal any further than 1/8th pedal it bogs down and wont go any faster than 10mph, but if i just barely touch the gas then it will cruise around at 60, just takes awhile to get there, we changed the timing around to no avail, my dad played around with the air/fuel screws also (i think thats what theyre called) and we couldnt really feel a diff, any ideas on what it could be??
P.S. it doesnt do this while in park, itll rev up like a normal engine, until you put it in gear and try to go
I didn't realize you had that 429 so grossly under-carbed. Maybe that is you'r problem, just not enough air/fuel to make it *snap*.
well thats what we thought, but no matter how much we turned those screws it didnt really make a difference, any idea how many turns we should turn them to seee??
I don't think you will be able to tune that 350 2bbl good enough to properly run a 429.. Tuning a carb isn't about "number of turns", it's about getting the proper jets, fuel/air, etc, etc...
I really don't know if that is the issue or not, but I can guarantee your truck will run better with a proper sized carburetor. I'll let someone else jump in and see if they have any other ideas. I'm no expert.
This formula will get you in the ballpark for carb size. CID x RPM x V.E. / 3456 = CFM. That's cubic inch displacement x max RPM x Volumetric efficiency.

thats what i thoughtt, i can hear a hiss coming from the enginee, but i cant find any open ports, i have plugged up all the ones i can see, if there is one that sucker is pretty small because i cant find it
That is what I originally thought too, but he said in park he can rev it all he wants. Accelerator pump is working.
@77 2wd - A lot of the folks aren't here on weekends, sometimes you have to be patient and wait til Monday to get a good response.
It may be working, but just not very well. An engine without a load on it won't require as big of a squirt to get going. Definitely should check the pump to see if it's shooting two solid streams. The diaphragm is probably hardened up and not working well.
To the OP: Pull the air cleaner off your carb (engine off) and look down the throat of the carb while opening the throttle. You should see two solid shots of gas.
By the way, those mixture screws are the idle mixture screws. Adjusting those will make no difference off idle.
ok so its a 2bbl on an adapter plate on a 4bbl intake, and i was just checking things out while it wastnt running and i was throttling it, and i see that where the adapter plate meets the manifold, there is some gas seeping out on both sides, could this cause the bogging?
