Too good to be true???

A neighbor of mine has a built Cleveland for sale and he's only asking a grand. He says it has been bored .040 with Keith Black pistons, a rather large spec cam, extensive head work has been done, to include titanium valves, and a four barrel intake and carb. He says he put it on a dyno and it makes close to 600 hp. He offered it to me so cheap because he has an old AMC Marlin he's fixing up. Should I be weary of this offer? What should I look for when I go to take a look at the engine? I'm wanting to put it in my 69 Montego but I don't want to get railed without vasoline. I have some parts to build a stout little Windsor, but the Cleveland already being built will save me some money.

I'll be the first to call BS on that hp, I'd have to see that dyno sheet. What heads are on it ?

X3, receipts are a good thing but obviously not always trustworthy. It takes a lot of coin to get 600 ponies out of a cleveland, so maybe your knowledge of what he is like may indicate whether the build was possible?
then again there are a lot of people who are passionate about cars that seem to have nice rides but not much else so mabe not so accurate.
Hey, even a good rebuild would be more than 1K, (more like 2-3), so even if it is just that it would be worth it. Maybe find his rebuilder and pick his brains? A bit of leg work is always worth it buddy. Good luck

They are 4V quench heads and he did give me a business card from the shop that built it. What are some of the issues Clevelands have that I may want to look in to? I know nothing about the Cleveland engines so I don't want to go in without knowing what to ask. And it is a 4 bolt main block.

there is probably a couple to be aware of.
Firstly they have a reputation for poor oiling. I wont go into that here as there is probably heaps on the stickies on this forum and the web. A lot of smoke and mirrors here and not as bad as people have been led to believe. Maybe an issue with racing but you will get a fair bit of mileage, all things being equal before that should be an issue especially if it has just been rebuilt.
Secondly, the main beauty (if thats the right word) of the clevelands is their breathing. They literally have massive ports (in comparison to the chevvies) so if you have a really worked 4V top end, your bottom range response may not be as good, but they will flow the hell out at the top RPM's.
2V's have smaller ports which is generally more streetable from better air velocity so it really depends on how many revs you want to be running to all the time.

I really don't know for sure, but I believe all 4v head 351Cs came with 4 bolt mains. Graig or Mark will chime in if I am wrong. Guys? Poap John

tim meyers machine shop

tim meyers has a oiling upgrade you need know about. scary simple upgrade and their are a few different ways to upgrade for hi rpm application but if just general purpose his is a good application. next is restrictors to cam and several other upgrades. if bearing clearance is good and tight you should be fine. ran cleveland and never had issues. really like this engine.
