79 f150 fuel problems

So I went and bought a 79 f150 like the title says and it isn't getting gas I think. I replaced the fuel line from the tank to the hose but still no help. So I think it may be a clogged filter or the pump in the tank is bad because the pump from the engine to carb is newer. Any insight to this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It would help to know which engine you're running. I don't think there is a pump in the tank unless it's aftermarket. If it is stock there should be a mechanical fuel pump on the engine. There is a fuel filter on the carb and it is common practice to add another before the fuel pump somewhere but that probably isn't stock so it could be in the engine bay or by the tank. The pickup in the tank could also be clogged. Dropping the tank isn't horrible but isn't fun if it's full, you could get a gas can and fuel line and see if you can start it that way at least narrow down where the problem is. Just run a line from the pump to the gas can. You can also crank the engine and check out output from the fuel pump, it should be strong. Again use some fuel line and gas can to catch the fuel. Good luck, my problems turned out being an old fuel filter and worn out pump.

It's the 351 engine. I will try the gas can with hose direct to the pump. Thank you for all the info

351M/400: The fuel pump bolts to the left (drivers) side of the engine block. Its bolt pattern is 12 & 6 o'clock.

All other V8 fuel pumps bolt to the timing cover using a 3 & 9 o'clock bolt pattern.

351C's have the same pattern as 351M/400, but were only factory installed in 1970/74 Passenger Cars/Ranchero's.

So we took a line from the fuel pump directly into a 5 gal gas can and fuel was leaking out of the carb which we fixed with a new gasket so I know it's getting fuel. We also put new plugs in it and it will crank and sputter with the help of starting fluid at times but other times it won't even sputter. At this point I'm clueless on what to do. Any help appreciated!

If your getting gas now then maybe your not getting spark or spark at the right time. You might try turning the distributor a little to the left and or right when cranking to see if you can get a better response out of it... If you get something then you know the timing is off. You might also take off your ignition control module and get it tested at autozone or somewhere...

So we got it going briefly then it kept cutting out under heavy throttle or idling for over like 30 secs. Going to Change the fuel filter tomorrow and then drop the tank and pull the sock. With the distributor I tried turning it left and right but it didn't seem to want to move so I'm not sure on that.

it holds down the plate that holds your dizzy in place where the base of the dizzy goes into the block should be a 1/2 inch wrench unless you have an air cond. compressor its easy to get to the compressor makes it a bi**h

If you are getting fuel at the carb I don't know if you need to drop the tank just yet, it can be a real PITA. On my truck at least there is a fuel filter screwed into the carb, you could remove this and make sure you are getting a good flow of gas when you crank the engine. If you are like others have suggested it may be timing or spark.

Ya I'm going to change the fuel filter before the carb Tom and try to adjust the timing. If that doesn't do anything then I'm going to drop the tank and pull the sock then just run a filter between the tank and the pump since I just put new 3/8s fuel line in. Hopefully I won't have to droP the tank though.
