Installing fuel pump

I am trying to install a new stock mechanical fuel pump on a '79 400. I can't seem to get the pump to prime. I have put fuel into the carb, the line going to the carb from the pump and even squirted fuel into the inlet side of the pump. It will start and run for a few seconds and then die. I have tried to turn the motor over several seconds with no success. I have also took the fuel line from the tank off the pump and blown air back into the tank thinking I may of had a plug line but with no luck. It has a full tank of gas also. Anybody have any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

Sounds like the fuel pump is defective.

Did you make sure there was no air coming in anywhere?

Might try disconnecting the fuel lines. Put your finger over the outlet while someone turns over the engine ( disconnect the coil wire). If you feel intermitten pressure, the pump is more than likely working. If you are thinking there is something wrong with your fuel supply then try running a fuel line straight into a gas can. If it does run using the gas can then you will know that you have fuel plumbing problems. I can't remember if the 400's run directly off a cam or if there is a rod that may have slipped out when you changed pumps. I will check my manuals.

You mounted it with the lever on the correct side of the crankshaft eccentric ...right ?

One thing that many people want to do is "test" the pump by working the lever that actually pumps the fuel. When this it done it rips the diaphram and the pump is ruined. NEVER work the pump by hand. The cam that works the pump has very little motion. Anything beyond this ruins the pump. I know this from experience!

well I tested the pump by hooking it up to the container and it worked.

My fuel guage does not work but I remember that I put 10 gallons of gas in it the day before the pump completely quit( it had been leaking for awhile). The truck sit for about a week along a dirt road before I got back to it to tow it home and I guess somebody decided to help themselves to my gas because my tank today was bone dry. Makes me feel dumb that I didn't check the tank before I posted this but makes me real mad that somebody stole my gas.

Thanks for all the help anyways

Glad you got the problem solved.

Real stupid if they siphoned the gas out of your tank.

Or maybe you aren't aware of a leak somewhere? The rubber fuel filler neck has a tendency to break down and spring a leak. Or maybe the tank has a pinhole?
