Out of curiosity, I was looking at car-part.com today just to see what used springs were available and noticed a couple things that raised questions.
1) If you search up to 2004, it asks you to select a desired spring code. After 2004 it does not. Did Ford make a radical change in 2005 and abandon the spring codes so often mentioned on here? What do the 2005 Ex's use? (I figured that springs from a newer truck would generally have more wear left than springs from an older truck, but it seems the "newest" V code I could search for would still be about 8 years old.)
2) From what I can gather, there is no definitive guide that matches a spring part number to the letter code. I've found several threads here that discuss it. A couple posts have fairly detailed descriptions attempting to match partial part numbers to spring codes, but I'm still not sure they are complete. At least, I couldn't find anything that matched my springs. If there isn't a table somewhere, how does a salvage yard know what the spring codes are when they part a vehicle out? Can you really be sure that a spring they claim is a V or X code really is what they say?
Truly the only way to tell what type springs they are is to see the door sticker on the vehicle they are coming off of. As far as I know, there is no way to match the numbers on the springs to the stiffness of the spring. Some of the gurus around here might have an idea. However, there is a way to tell new springs with the letters. There are a few guys that have posted springs codes so all of will know what we are looking at. Then you can cross reference those with the aftermarket ones to get their item numbers. For example X codes. They are for F250-350 with snow plow prep package and standard on F450-550s. There item number is 43-818 at SDTruck Springs. That is why I did a lot of research and decided to go with new springs. They were just under $600 with $150 of that being shipping. I decided to get new ones due to not being certain how the donor vehicle was treated(wrecked or whatever). I'm happy with mine now. Just changed them yesterday. Good luck.
In 2005 Ford changed the Super Duties over to coil springs in the front, thats why they cross reference only up to 2004. The '05 EX's are the only SD family members to keep the leaf springs up front because it was their last year of production and it was cheaper to not change them for the last year.
Here is thread from a couple of years ago when I was trying to verify my new spring's codes. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...and-codes.html Please be sure to rep Red Ex if this is any help in your search, he has proven to be a really decent guy and super helpful many times.
AND he has a BADASS EX!
