1990 E4OD OD problem

Hi I have a 1990 class C motorhome with a 460ci engine an a E4OD transmission, It shift pretty smooth, but it goes on overdrive mostly only when I go up a hill, and down shift as soon as I reach the top when it should be the opposite.
I bright it to a tranny shop, they change fluid and filter and make road test on a plane road and find no problem.

The way I see it is that it shift 1-2-3 then I hit the OD button and it goes on 4, then, if I'm going up a little or asking for more power it upshift another gear(5th ) and when I coming back on a plane road it downshift to the 4th gear until I need more power. It doesn't look normal to me.
Please let me know what you think.
Sorry my English is not to good.
Thanks
André

It is a four speed transmission, not a five speed, so there is no 5th gear. What you are feeling is the torque converter locking.

The way to diagnose this is to see what the sensors are telling the computer. A good scan tool can do this. That might be hard to find where you are.

Thank you Mark Kovalsky, I'll try to find a good scan tool and give you the results. I knew it was a 4 speed transmission but it really feel like it shift another gear. Is the torque converter suppose to lock only when more power is required or if on normal road condition it's suppose to lock ?
I had a 1998 motorhome before with the same setup ( 460,e4od ) and i never experience this.
Thanks again

It will lock at any condition at the right speed.

Does it mean that I don't go fast enough to make it lock, I'm driving it at around
55 to 60 mph most of the time. If it's not the case does it mean my torque converter could be the problem. Sorry i'm not a expert and I've got a lots of question. what make the torque converter lock is it the centrifugal force or maybe fluid pressure. Before I bring it to the transmission shop, is there anything I could verifie by my self or it's to complicated.
Thanks again.

The torque converter locks with fluid pressure. This pressure is supplied by the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid. The solenoid is controlled by the PCM. At 55 MPH and a steady pedal the converter should be locked. If you release the accelerator pedal it will unlock and then relock when you press it again.
