tranny expert needed!
My old mans 97 f-350 psd with auto is having troubles. When you turn the overdrive off it locks the converter like it should. Then if you shift down to second, everything is fine. But if you downshift to first gear it just freewheels. You still can accelerate but it acts like the torque converter is'nt lock up. Is this a electrical problem or a valve in the tranny sticking or what?? He's afraid that he needs a new tranny but I think and hope its something simpler. Thanks for any input.

well, number one is the e4od doesn't lock up in 1st gear , it shifts to lockup right after it shifts in to 2nd gear , one why you cane tell if the lockup is working is to get the truck up to crusing speed and tap the brack pedel you should fell it shift out back in to lockup, number 2 is the overdrive button has nothing to do with lockup it shouts overdrive of and the coast clutch off this is the free wheel you fell in overdrive with your foot off the pedel, when he shifts it in to 1st how fast is he going it doesn't shift into 1st till you are below 17mph,

Thanks for the reply. I understand that the button is no mater in 1st and 2nd gear. The secnerio was this. Coming down a steep grade he was going real slow in first letting the engine hold him back. Half way down he stopped to help a fellow motorist(a dodge). When pulling back on the road in first manual their was no engine restriction. He shifted up and back down a few times and even came to a full stop a few times trying to get it to lock in with no results. Still won't engine brake in first today.
