Ok guys, I finally decided to grow a sack and purchase a 460. I am going to put it on a engine stand and build it myself over the next couple years, but I have never done anything close to this haha
My father in law has been working on cars for 50 years, so he will be assisting me when I need it, but I really want to teach myself how to get this done.
So I am asking for you all to compose me some sort of a shopping list of what I need to get done by a motor shop, such as porting and polishing.
I am also looking for a shopping list of things I can do myself with normal tools.
I am basically going to tear it down to the block and replace everything. It's more like buying a block and building it up.
I sincerely hope you guys will help me out. I dont see why you wouldnt because you guys always have. Thanks a ton!! You dont know how much your input and advice means to me.
I dont have any biases towards any company unless someone tells me I need to! haha I dont want an outrageous build. I want a good rough idle, loud a$$ exhaust, but yet be dependable and decent on gas. By decent I mean at least 10, but not expecting 18 lol Money is not really an option, but I am looking to stay around the 5k range.
my set up on red dog is 460 bored 30 over, port and polished heads, rv cam, set of used headers (i picked up cheap no brand name on it) msd ignition, edelbrock performer single plane intake, and a edelbrock carb model 1411-3396 its made specifically for 429s 460s and chevrolet 454s mine is an 800cfm after having a local guru rebuild it
in red dog i have a 160 mph speedo from equus in my 78 and with my brand new tires and a long straight away i did 140 mph most awesome ride of my life in a 78 f150 dentside these 460's are awesome when you do it right i had an old pro teach me how to port and polish and do a valve job intake 2.08 exhaust 1.65 and installed new rings and pistons h beam rods installed a new cam thought it was an rv but its a comp cam XE262H hydraulic (Specs:262/270 adv., 218/224@.050, .513/.520, 110 LSA) and that's about it
You will also need a shop to hot tank and check the block for cracks. You can have the cam and main lines checked and straightened if need be. And then decide on an overbore. You then need to get the pistons and have the shop fit and number them for you. They can resize the rods and balance the whole thing as well as assemble the pistons and rods.
After that, it's assembly time.
Build suggestions and other info here--rememeber, these are "serving suggestions" and ymmv:
My first question, How are you going to use the truck, 2 or 4WD? What trans?
It's a 4wd. Auto tranny, I'm guessing c6. I can verify that when I get home on Friday. Sucks only being able to work on it 3 days a week while I am away at college.
Hot Tank of Block $85
Mag The Block For Cracks $70
Hot Tank On The Heads $50
Mag The Heads For Cracks $30
Port and Polish Heads Including Bowl Bending $650
3 Angle Valve Job $265
Resurfacing of Heads (If Required) $120
Bore and Hone
o WITHOUT Torque Plate $255
o WITH Torque Plate $360
as someone else said above, you need to register with 460 forum and spend at minimum a week of reading through threads and builds there to have an idea of what you'll want/need. There is a guy on there called the mad porter. after seeing dyno charts of what his heads can do, I would not consider letting anyone else port my iron 460 heads. he has a variety of options available for different price points. but whatever, read though and make your own choices. As far as actual engine building goes, what you will find on fte here is that one guy will get on a particular build thread and trivialize the whole thing. without any dyno charts or experience, he will just keep saying one thing or another is the best, and people with actual knowledge don't feel like getting in a flame war with the troll and either stop arguing or don't post in the first place. So you may find a thread on here that would leave you with the impression that if you don't, say, throw away your 460 and start over with an efi block, or something stupid like that, then you won't make any power. It doesn't meant thats a good idea.
Stick to 460 forum for the tech stuff. But it would be cool to post your build thread, with receipts, here. I'm hopefully going to be rebuilding one of my 460's eventually and I'm still just lurking on 460 forum and soaking it all in.
I will hop over there, but I feel that members like Mike and some others have plenty of knowledge. I have some very reputable machine shops around St. Louis where I go to school so they will be doing all my porting, etc.
This is a process that will take me years. There a couple reasons for the long wait.
1. I am doing as much of the work by myself. Obviouslly i cant port and polish heads, etc but I havent ever worked on a motor before so I will be ordering a book about rebuilding big block fords. I am doing this not only because I want a big a$$ motor, I really want to learn as much as I can.
2. Its going to cost a crap ton. I have the money, but it goes into multiple things haha I am restoring my 78, fixing up my 2004 mustang gt, and my 08 harley. This is something that once the truck is completely done, i will have it ready to drop in a roll.
Thanks for everything guys. I will be posting all of my progress in my build thread, which is in my signature. Hopefully you all will check it out and stay tuned.

Nothing against the people you have confidence in but the folks over at the 460 forum know 429/460 engines. Not a general knowledge of theory. They know specifically the 385 series Ford engine. Scott (the mad porter) is probably 1 of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to the 385 series heads. Not that he knows heads in general he knows the 385 series heads. Kinda like buying a Kaase engine. It just don't get any better than that.
I agree with going to 460 Forum. I love this place for 73 - 79 pickups but it's just that, a pickup forum.
460 forum has a pile of information and like they said there are people on there that live 460's. I also go to 429-460 forum but I find it is more race orientated.
A good example of what you may learn is if your heads are worth porting. Depending on what they are it may be more economical and you may get better flow by going to a after market aluminum head.
Another one is smokenchoken, no disrespect but chances are you don't need h beam rods. I may be wrong, if your pushing 7 or 800 hp and revving 6500+ then you probably made the right choice. H beam rods aren't cheap.
