Can someone here help me by telling me what the engine code works out to be for C6ME-A. I know that the engine is a 360 because I have checked the stroke using the dowel/marker technique.

C6ME-A's are usually 390's or 428's not 360's.

The "C" designates a 60's block, the "6" is the second digit. So you are looking at a 1966 FE Block. Could be that you have a 352 instead of the 360. Have you checked the bore? If memory serves right, 4.0 is 352 and 4.05 is 360/390. One thing for sure, looks like an FE so go from there. What are your plans, how much detail do you require for the engine?

Mike,

I tried the old dowel and marker trick and came up with a 3.5" stroke. I know that this is not fool-proof, but close. What is the stroke on a 428?

The engine is still running in the truck so I don't have a need to tear it down at this point so I can't check the bore.

I was just trying to gather as much information about the engine before I have to.

I have to change the rear main seal in it soon so when I do I will check the numbers on the crank. I will check some of the other posts and see if I can match the crank numbers.

Nick.

I agree, the dowel and marker is not fool proof, however, the stroke on the 390 is 3.75 and I think the 428 approaches 3.80. Have we already established that this is not he original motor in the truck? I can't remember that far back...

Mike,

Nope, this is not the original engine. It was replaced about 15 years ago. It was originally a 360 according to the v.i.n. I think that I may be banging my head against the wall searching for answers until I actually have to tear it down.

I found a site on an old post that indicated the block is a 1966 Mercury block but it didn't tell me what the "-A" at the end of it means. The number cast on the block is C6ME-A.

The block is painted red, the heads, sheet metal and intake are all blue. Also, the oil filter points down and out.

Thanks.

If the stroke is 3.50" then it's a 360. There is not a C6ME-A block with a 4.00" bore, just 4.05 and 4.13, which means its not a 352. The block was probably a 390, but the rebuilder used it to build the 360 for your truck. This happens all the time as there is no dimensional difference between 360 390 and 410 blocks. I have two blocks with this cast #. Both came out of '66 Mercs: a 410 and a 390. but I dont think this number is merc only, not sure. A friend of mine pulled a motor out of a '72 f150 that had this casting number, it ended up being a 428.

C6ME-A does stand for 66 Mercury block , but this casting was used in both Fords and Mercs. The "A" just means that was the first casting variation of the 66 merc block. 352/360 had 3.5 inch stroke , the 390/427's had 3.78, 410/428's had 3.98
