I finally got a chance to look at the engine in my '55 F100 today and found the engine data plate. On it says ECY for the engine code. Can anyone tell me what it means? I thought it was a 239ci but it appears not now.
Engine code is the 4th and 5th characters of the VIN, ECY does not compute.
This will only tell you what it was built with, not what is in it 50 years later.

A 55 239 should be V5
My truck was made in Canada so the VINS were different.

I'm not sure that you are reading the replies you are getting to your questions on this 55 F-100.
I am giving you answers to your questions right out of a Factory 55-56 Ford/Mercury Chassis & Body Book. Once again this code ECY is a 272 C.I.D. Engine Code, and this engine as the Book Quotes came from a heavy duty truck.
Just a further note the 256 C.I.D. engine is in fact one they used in the 55 Mercury Truck. Canada still had the Flathead Engine in 54, then the OHV. begining in 55.
Now the Mercury and Monarch, cars in Canada had the OHV. in 54.

It would help if sufficient facts were in the first post or you at least had your location listed.
VIN/data plates are attached by 2 screws to the inside of the glovebox door so that means nothing unless you know the full history of the vehicle. Ive sold scores of VIN plates and doors on Ebay over the years.
Obviously a 272 HD was not factory installed in a F100 unless by a very special dealer order.
Wow, you guys are touchy. I don't think YOU read MY replies in the subject 5 star. The only reply I made was to Merc when he told me to check the 4th and 5th digits, I let him know my VIN was Canadian so it is different. I never disagreed or agreed on anything you said 5 star. All I stated was what I found on the block. If ECY is from a bigger truck, then it appears someone changed the engine.
As for the cast numbers, I made a post asking where the find them and never got any replies.
To, Babyfacejack no one is trying to be touchy here as you refer to it. All posts or replies are in answer to help you out with your questions.
I scanned a portion of a page from the book on these 55-56 Ford CDN. Trucks, along with the red marks along side the ECY Engine code you requested I.D. on.
These in turn indicate the type of Truck that paticular engine code was installed in.

I thought that I knew ALL the block codes but ECY is a new one on me. I wonder what makes it HD? It was available in 2 and 4 bbl versions. There is no mention of any special HD part in Hollanders.
I never heard of it either, its wierd, I couldn't fine number cast right into the block. What I found was more like a vin plate kind of thing attached to it. I am hoping the get it pulled this weekend and clean it up better to try to find the numbers or more info. Its too hard in the truck and way too dirty,
