2003 Explorer with 4.6 V8, "transmission overheat" light keeps illuminating after the transmission was replaced with a reman unit. The manufacturer and installer are standing behind their work but are stumped... The trans cooler was tested for backpressure etc and checked out good. The light comes on after the vehicle is driven about 15-20 miles.
Any suggestions and/or input is greatly appreciated
Heat is generated when a transmission slips. In my experience, reman units are usually garabage. They are built on a budget, and only replace the parts that the builder deemed necessary. Apparently they missed or skipped something. Thats why I have always had my transmissions rebuilt by a qualified shop as opposed to swapping in a trans that came off someone elses ride, which may or may not have had its original failure repaired.
The high tranny temps have been confirmed with specific temps through a monitor. They have ruled out a chafed wire or bad sensor. The new/remanufactured tranny seems to overheat when the vehicle is operated for longer than 30-40 minutes. The trans cooler was flushed and tested prior to installing the reman tranny. Nobody is sure why there are high temps although Khan definitely made a good point.
You can get heavy duty torque converters with larger friction surfaces, brazed fins, and torrington bearings. A better torque converter should help. If there is a problem in the valve body for the engagement solenoid, you can get a low pressure condition, and the hydraulic circuit will not fully pressurize. Low pressure can cause slipping.
