For an automatic trans 4D100 superduty trans 180-200 is normal depends on weather outside hot humid or cold ? and transmission load are you hauling anything? do you have a trans cooler should have one from factory.

I was towing at the time, and I only have the factory cooler. It was approx 80* outside at the time. Where is the point I should get nervous?

What year is it and how many miles on it? I have an 2001 f-250 sd I've changed my trans oil 5 times once a year and my oil when towing a boat or trailer runs 170-190 no problems as of yet. the factory cooler is ok not to worry about it if in the winter the trans oil is still 180-190 check the temp sensor for being faulty you can get a lazer thermometer pretty cheap or borrow one and when the temp is 170-190 point it at the trans and read the reading to see how accurate the sending unit is if the same I'd just drive it if the oil was to hot the p.c.m (power train module) would trigger the engine light or trans light if equipped

A Trucool or a 6.0 tranny cooler will give you piece of mind.

Is the 6.0L cooler larger, providing more surface area for heat transfer and how easy is it to change from the stock cooler to a 6.0L cooler? Will it mount up the same or are modifications needed?

Is this the general consensus?

Mine was running consistently 190-200 without load. I changed the fluid, filter and installed a V10 tranny cooler. Now I'm lucky to break 150 unloaded. Just another option for you to look at. A local respected deisel shop is using the V10 cooler with great results.

I am completely stock on that end for now and I watched those temps this summer. Interstate driving unloaded i would see 165 -175, in town stop and go it would climb to 185 or so. abient temp was in the upper 90's

You can run your transmission at 190* all day long. 220* is redline with 230* the pull over and let it idle and cool down before going on. If your worried you can add extra cooling, but you really don't need it. That being said I always add an extra cooler (almost the first thing I do when I buy a new truck) to any truck I run.

Tell me more about this V10 cooler. Has anyone else installed one and are they a direct bolt in?

schmity,

Normally you should see tranny temps 70-80 degrees above outside air temps, thats unloaded/not towing. Around town (stop & go traffic) will be a bit higher.

Towing is another matter. 190-200 while towing is fine. If you decide to add a larger tranny cooler you will see about a 40 degree drop in temps while towing. I added the larger cooler because I live in SW Oklahoma and the 110 degree outside temps made it for a miserable summer. With the larger cooler, hot outside air temps, and pulling a 10,000 lb 5th wheeler I was hitting 190 degrees.
