Gotta couple questions about proper trans temp. Most of the time i cruise around 120-130 F. I can see up to 180 or 190 when going down a steep grade with OD off. My question is what is a proper operating range and when i should back off or pull over? Gauge is an Autometer NV. Thanks in advance
most run around empty at about 180...pull over cooler her down if you see 210-220..if your towing...add a true cool or 6.0 trans cooler and you will be good to go...
have been seriously considering a 6.0 trans and inter cooler (not saying i want one to wreck, but god that would be easier) i just wasn't completely sure about the proper temp, but i should be ok at 180? i tow a mild amount (nothing over 5 or 6 grand) and just had the tranny replaced about 14k ago so i don't feel like doing that again
It has been my experience that what ever the outside temperature is, add 100 degrees and that's what your tranny temp should be. Idling around town in traffic will allow it to go a little higher. Synthetic tranny fluid will allow for cooler temps, and a higher tollerance for heat too. You might want to consider that as an option.
I usually sit at 160 in the summer, maybe 180 when towing, I have a tru cool inline with the stock as well. I wouldn't worry much about yours at this point. As stated, 210 220, it starting to get up there.
How the heck do you get a temp increase going DOWNHILL?????????????
Are you coasting with the TC unlocked?
When going down hill, the transmission is holding you back, so it is working hard, just in the reverse from when it is pulling. The engine is coasting and not working hard, but the tranny is.
yea thats a real steep grade crossing a mountain (i don't wanna see what the other side of a runaway truck ramp looks like lol) yea that's with it locked h2
