I myself would be going with one of the XP's for a plow setup. Especially if your stocker was giving you grief but that's jmo. Once again, higher charge rate at idle and at low rpm's.
I hear ya. That being said, the 190amp unit is supplying 85% more amps at hot idle than the stock unit did. That's a huge difference. The 270amp XP Series is $40 off at the moment $549.95.
I run the 270 amp XP alternator in my Excursion and was so impressed with it that we became a dealer for DC Power! Well, not QUITE in that order, but I am impressed still.
You won't be disappointed with the DC Power XP series. That said, another option you have available to you is to do the high idle mod to get you the extra output associated with 1100-1150 rpm and stick with the 190.
I'd be happy to chat over this some more with you if you want as well.

Dc should have the 190 in stock by now, 2 weeks ago i ordered the 190, a week went by, so i e-mailed them and they didn't have the parts to make em! Dc didn't try to up sell me, im ok with that, but they should have e-mailed me as soon as they received my order. Im going with tenneyalt.com, custom built by a small shop. 270 amp lifetime warranty for $325.00
DC Power did indeed finally get their long awaited shipment of parts in and are sending their backlog of orders out. I haven't heard of any Labor Day Weekend sale, but it of course is always a possibility.
Of course, if you choose to order from us, we could save you some cash just anyway. We don't publish our prices, but give us a call if you'd like a quote.
Just installed a 185 DC Power about a month ago purchased from Ed @ FICM Repair. Added the necessary 4 ga. cables for the grounds & power. DID NOT use any spacers as none were provided but belt still seems to be tensioned enough. Alternator working flawlessly. Voltmeter stays at 13.9 pretty much at all times. Here are a few pics if anyone is interested in a side by side to the Ford alternator.
Great post! Spacers are generally only included with the non-OEM series alternators due to a discrepancy with the alternator's case design and required clearance of the attachment bracket for the rigid water line on the passenger side.
Is there a reason not too many here swap to the large case 3G? It's a popular swap for the excursion crowd, but everyone here seems dead-set on DC Power.

Haven't heard about the 3g, but have had recommendation to go to a 6g case. What are the differences?
Most people go to the DC because it's such a relatively inexpensive upgrade compared to a motorcraft reman which, IMHO, are basically junk.
FICM ed: I will hit you up next week sometime after the holiday weekend. I didn't realize you were a site sponsor, nor that you had access to dc alts. Looks like I need to spend some time reading through your site and learn all about the ficm, and it's upgrading! Thanks -ken
