Well the Excursion has me baffled, I looked up under the dash and the screws for the shifter shaft are tight, I checked at the other end of the cable where it goes to the transmission and there is a white connector that looks like it is supposed to hold onto the black serrated end of the shifter cable, it looks like it has some adjustment in it, and it looks like it has moved, i can move the cable back and forth about an inch. I don't want to break the connector, it looks like there is a spot for a flat blade screwdriver to go into, but I don't want to do it without someone giving me the heads up first. I checked under my F450 but it has a different end on the cable.
I guess my wife had it not go into park, and into reverse on its own twice, I guess she was trying to leave it running and run in to drop off something and it about backed into someone before she realized it was moving. I was more worried about it running herself or one of the kids over.
It looks like an easy fix. Is it, how do I adjust it, and lock it down?
Well after doing lots of Google searchs, I found a page that Robin had posted that gave me the info I needed. (Sad that Google does a better job then the forums own search function.)
I found the other end of the cable, where it attaches to the transmission, near the switch was loose, it was tight on the lever, but the white piece that attaches it all together was loose allowing the black part at the end of the shifter cable to move freely about an inch, after i just manned up and popped it off I found had just come undone, and was loose. I popped it back on, moved the trans to make sure it was in park, which it was and used my channel locks to pop it back closed in the center position. I checked and I have all my gears, the indicator is dead centered in the right spot in all gears and it has no play in it at all.
Good to hear you got it fixed that easely, Google does seem to work better than the search here sometimes, and the anwser usually directs you to a FTE post.

I believe this is the unit on the trans you were talking about?

YUP, that is it, when it is locked down it is centered on the black cable end, when it is loose, and can be adjusted, it is off center, on mine the cable was just above the white part. Try as I may I could not find this picture at 4 in the morning.... I just had to wing it and say well it is either going to work or break. Luckily it worked.
Just for future reference, does anyone know if you can replace the white piece separately?

I have the whole new part, I was going to replace it, so I PB blasted the whole thing, and before removing it, it worked great!
