I've got a small dilemma that I got a warning on the road. My reverse lights are on while my truck is in drive. I hope it's an easy fix, not much money to spare here...
Well Chris, That can not happen... your (63) truck didn't come with backup lights!
Chris, how are we to help you with such vague information. i mean you don't give us anything to go on! not even the year! no engine or trans info column shift or floor.... Come on Man! help us help you!
With a newer engine and trans; some of the newer trans had a reverse switch on the trans it self, look to see if there is a pair of wires going to the trans.
So you or someone else installed back-up lights in your '63? You don't have a Hurst transmission. You probably have something like a Ford top loader transmission. There is a back-up light switch for your Hurst shifter which is a little plunger type switch mounted on a simple little bracket which mounts to the transmission. If adjusted properly, the plunger is pushed when you select reverse. It sounds as if your switch is misadjusted so the lights are on all the time. Or possibly it is corroded or stuck. Summitt Racing has new ones for $25. See the Summitt or Jegs or speed shop of your choice web site for details. Good luck!
I couldn't figure out how to upload a picture from my phone. Sorry.
But we did search for wires and didnt see any running to the sides or bottom of the transmission. So we took the cover off of the floor shifter and found the wires AND the switch. Adjusted the switch back and forth with a screw driver and fixed the problem.
Only problem now though is I can't start my truck in park anymore, it has to be in drive. Any thoughts?
I was under the impression you had a manual transmission. Now it seems you have an automatic. It sounds like what you have most recently done is adjusted/misadjusted the neutral safety switch which could cause the situation you have now. We will need to know exactly which transmission you have if we are to help you. Nothing you are describing was stock to your truck. As Number Dummy and others so often point out, when you modify something and do not keep minute detail of what you've (or some previous owner has) done, it can be a nightmare to figure out how to help you. Get whatever information you can off of your transmission including the number of bolts on the pan so that someone can figure out what you've got and then go from there.
If the 351M came from a truck, it has a C6 (17 trans pan bolt holes). If from a car, it could have a C6, C4 (11 pan bolt holes) or an FMX (14 pan bolt holes).
The original A/T was the FX Cruise-O-Matic, installed in all 1961/64 F100/250's except 1961 F100's w/223's (used Ford-O-Matic).
The original NSS (CODF-7A217-A) came with a curved bracket made as part it. Mounted on the steering column adjacent to the manual control selector lever. Could not have been used w/a floor shift conversion.
Since backup lamps for trucks were not available until 1967, and no Ford truck came with the A/T shift lever on the floor until the 21st century, there's no telling what the NSS is from.
Where are the backup lamps located, below the taillamps? If so, they have a flat base and most likely a round lens. The lens will have numbers on it, post what they are.
If the backup lamps are from what I think they are, I have an idea what the NSS is.
