Always On reverse lights

2002 Limited and my reverse lights stay on all the time no matter what gear the lever is in. As soon as the truck starts the lights will come on and not go off until the truck is turned off. Any ideas?

Leetudor, I'm sorry I don't have the answer for you.

But thanks for posting, I go to Tenn. several times per year.

Back in the 70's we called these racing lights, so now I know not to pull up to your Ex and rev my engine.

Sounds like your reverse light switch is stuck "on". They are usually on the transmission or connected to the shift linkage somewhere.

Well I found out at dark that the lights are on at about 80% then when you put it in reverse it goes to 100% brightness. Which end do you think the switch is on?

I think your back-up light switch may be part of the neutral safety switch because it has an 11-pin connector. I'd call your local Ford dealer and ask them.

leetudor,
The +12 feed for the reverse lights come thru the DTR (digital transmission range) sensor located on the DS of the transmission. It passes the +12 thru the switch when reverse is selected and goes from there to the reverse lamps.
It also is sent to the tow relay and the Electrochromatic inside mirror if you have one (not sure what it is used for there).
ON the connector to the DTR, +12 is on pin 9 LB/PK and reverse comes out pin 11 BK/PK.
I would pull the tow relay and disconnect the mirror just to be sure neither of these is affecting the circuit.
Good luck.
Tom

Drove it yesterday and found out that the reverse sensors are on all of the time also. Would that have something to do with the gear selector or the reverse switch on the transmission?

leetudor,

The +12v that comes thru the DTR also feeds the Parking Aid Module (PAM) if you have that option.

That module is located in the right rear quarter panel.

To troubleshoot, I would disconnect the output wire from the DTR and see if the +12 is present on the DTR output pin when the shifter is not in reverse (please, for safety sake do not have the engine running to check this ). It can safely be done with just the ignition switch on.

Depending on that reading will determine what troubleshooting steps to take next.

Good luck.

Tom

If you are talking about the PAM, the connector diagrams I have (for 2002) show this module in the right rear quarter panel under the air unit.

I have not been in that section myself.

Can you see anything under the unit back there?

Have you had a chance to check the DTR?

Well after some work and probing, had to replace my fuse box. Others problems started to show up; cruise not working, locks working by themself...

Did you ever figure out what the issue was? I am currently having this issue with my 2018 F250 XLT, I am new to diesels and have no idea how the electrical works on them. It was a big step for me to install the EGR delete kit myself when I first purchased it 8 months ago.

Would this apply to my 2004 F150 FX4 ext cab? I bought it recently and the reverse bulbs were missing. Soon as I plugged one in, it was on, even without a key in ignition.
