Need some advice on trans maintenance

Hi guys,

2004 PSD 66k on the truck. I was interested in installing this http://www.dieselsite.com/2003-20076...tersystem.aspx

It is a bypass filter that works along witht he toilet paper roll we have up front. I have read that some guys are upgrading to the 08+ pan that works with an internal filter not sure if there are internal parts that require changing (never been in the trans as of yet since the dealer did the first trans fluid change free) in order to adapt the internal filter

Has anyone used this setup or the setup I showed above?

Thanks
Joe

The first FAQ on that DieselSite link says that Ford's filter is a by-pass filter and theirs is full flow.

To change your trans to the newer internal filter all you need to change is the filter and the pan. Nothing else inside changes.

Hi Mark,
Seeing you take an interest in this thread made me think of a couple of questions that you can probably answer.
Is the transmission "toilet roll filter" at the front of the truck a by-pass filter?
Is the filter you talked about actually a strainer?
What year was this started on or is it a later fix for some problems?

I'm assuming this a 2008+ filter & pan. What are the advantages over the 2003-2007 or dieselsite kit mentioned above?

The factory remote filter is a bypass. It filters 10% of the cooler line flow.

The 2008 and newer in pan filter is a 100% flow filter. It is not a strainer, it is a very fine filter. I forgot the actual rating, but it is lower than the bypass.

Mark,

thanks for the help....from what I understand you are THE tranny guy to talk to. The pan, filter and gasket are less than the diesel site filter assembly. It sounds like it more beneficial to swap over to the OEM '08+ filter and pan/magnet assy than spend money on the bypass filter....am I spot on?

Thanks for the time
Joe

Mark, every answer results in more questions!
1. I am guessing that the pan change is to provide room for the new filter, does this change the fill quantity?
2. Can you still use the old dipstick?
3. Does the new filter require any machining or are the threaded bolt holes already there?
I tried to "rep" you but I've got to spread the love around, thanks.

Joe, see post #2, the DieselSite filter is full flow. Can you post the part numbers, if you have them?

I also assume that it takes the same gasket??

-I don't have the part numbers.....was hoping someone could confirm that for me.

I did find this older posting from another site though:

Howdy -

I have the Dieselsite trans filter setup and have been running it for almost two years. Install was easy. I can't say how effective it is, but I bought it for peace of mind. It is definitely full flow, as the return line from the cooler goes through the filter back to the pan. All fluid runs through this filter.

Do you want/need any specific information about the setup?

The new pan holds a small amount more fluid. The new filter just pushes in like the old one did. There are no bolts or other fasteners.
Take the old pan off. Pull the filter out. Get the o-ring out of the trans if it didn't stay on the filter. Push the new filter, with the oring, into the hole. Use the original gasket and install the new pan. There is no change to the dipstick. This is all it takes, it is a direct replacement.
