B2 overheating problems
Recently, my son's Bronco II has begun to run hot, eventually overheating. Earlier this week, the top radiator hose blew apart. I replaced the hose and went thru a couple checks while the engine is running. First, I checked the top hose and it was hot and this usually indicates the thermostat is not stuck closed. Then I squeezed the top hose and got very little resistance, which indiactes the water pump is not pumping. But, when the top hose blew apart, antifreeze splattered all over the engine compartment. Does this indicate the pump was working??? So, before I tear it down to replace the pump, is their anything else to check for verification?
Thanks in advance for your help,
TK
Usually, a simple way to determine that the water pump is working, is when you look at your coolant in the radiator (cap off) you can notice a slight movement of the coolant with vibrating waves. This is especially noticebale after the thermostat has opened.
Now a shop can check this with a probe they stick in the radiator with the engine running. My way was what a mechanic showed me a long time ago, when I was a teenager.
The only exception would be if you have a plugged radiator, coolant looks stagnet when engine is running, and the water pump actually might be working.
Remember too, neglected radiators, cooling systems, are the main causes of water pump failures. A close second is belts that do not have the correct tension, either too tight, or too loose. They all play havak with water pumps, if not corrected.
