ive got an 86 f250 4x4 with the 300 4.9 and the four speed manual trans .ive recently acquired a 351m motor and im trying to see if i can keep my trans and transfer case or if i have to get a different set because the 351m is actually a big block.any suggestions??????
351M and 300 have different bolt patterns so unless your trans has a removable bell housing you'll need to get another. The t-case should bolt up to and ford tranny.
351M, 400, 429, 460 all have the same BP. 300, 302, 351w have a different one and I think the 360/390 have their own also but I'm not certain. And diesels have their own also.
I've done this swap. In all honesty, sell the motor and find a 351W.
To swap the 351M the right way, you have to find a set of engine perches from a 1980-1982 truck or Bronco equipped with a 351M/400. 302/351W perches will not work. This is much harder than it seems. You have three years of truck to look for, and a good amount of them have been scrapped in the last 33 years.
You'll also need to find a new transmission with a big block bell housing, as was stated earlier.
You'll need a rear sump oil pan if the 351M is from a car. If it is from a car, you'll also have to source the correct passenger side exhaust manifold because the passenger side manifold on the car 351M will interfere with the frame rail.
The accelerator cable is different as well, you'll either need to buy a new 351M/400 cable, or make your own.
Depending upon the changes Ford made by 1986, you may also need to swap out your radiator support, or cut the airflow opening wider for the V8's larger radiator, unless of course you already have the larger radiator. I'm not too sure how the 83+ trucks are set up.
IMHO, to add to what Fordzilla said, even if you go to the trouble of finding all the necessary components, you will still end up with 351M when all is said and done. And, maybe I should have started that with IM VERY HO.... I would take a 300 any day over the 351M. Just not worth the hassle. Absolutely the worst FoMoCo motor I have ever owned. Again though, I don't want to be "that guy", it's just my .02 cents. best wishes
Definitely not worth the trouble for a stock 351M. If it's a built 351M and he has plenty of 80-82 351M/400 trucks around to source the parts from, then maybe he'll be okay.
thank you all for the input i appreciate it i decided to stay with the 300 now im just searching for the shifter rod since mine was snapped at the base on top of the pin and finding a replacement has been harder to acquire than i ever thought possible
Also check around some 4x4 specialty/fabrication shops.
I have one locally that can fabricate a shifting lever, rod, stick etc... out of cold rolled stock. They bend it to match the bends of the old one, and fabricate the required "ends" to match.
